The Quest for the Holy Grain
The Boneyard

Alas, nothing lasts forever. Bye and bye, and for various reasons, some of our favorite establishments are forced to close their doors. This then is a page both nostalgic and melancholy, devoted to our Best Brew Pubs, Beer Bars, and Beer Retailers that are no longer with us.

Canal Street Restaurant & Pub
535 Canal Street
Reading, PA 19602
Phone:  610-376-4009

The Canal Street Pub is situated in an old factory, and combines an unusual atmosphere with great food and beer. The 18 taps are well-chosen and well-cared for, combining craft brews, locals, and imports. The styles cover the spectrum. 50-60 bottles are also offered. Our bartender and waitress were friendly and knew their craft.

Canal Street hosts brewfests and live music, and is located on top of Reading's Legacy Brewing Company.
Canal Street Pub is a great place to stop in for a quick one, and an ideal venue for meeting a couple of your best old friends if the situation should arise.

Alas, The Canal Street Pub closed for good in November, 2022.

Henry's 12th Street Tavern
10 NW 12th Avenue
Portland, OR 97209
503.227.5320

Henry's. "Don't go there." we were told. It is upscale. It is a meet market. Against local advice, following the Beer Traveler, we went and were glad we did. It is a bit chi-chi. But it has two large dining room areas, and a dark and somewhat depressing bar area with a few big screens hanging languidly. No one is here for sports. What saved it for us was the courtyard seating adjacent to the building in what once was part of an old manufacturing plant of some sort. The young wait staff had neither idea nor interest in the history of the building.

Let's cut to the chase. There were two reasons we were glad to have hit this place. First, their beer list has 99 taps listed. Very heavy on the Pacific Northwest and with offerings from many of the better known local brewpubs. So it is a good place to sample Deschutes, Rogue, Bridgeport and others on tap in one place. It also added a Dogfish Head or other Eastern beer for the homesick. Some Belgians and Germans rounded out a nice list. However, they had just run out of my first choice often enough to make me wonder if the beer list had gotten a little outdated on them.

The second reason to go to Henry's was the food. It was excellent. Interesting choices and bar stand-bys at reasonable prices. My chili scallops and prawns with fried rice and Henry's off the charts excellent slaw was superb. The orange and honey Oregon beer I ordered to accompany it had just run out though, so I did it with Paulaner Hefe, my go-to summer beer.

The bonus for Henry's outdoor seating is the place is a meet market. Young women enter through the bright airy courtyard instead of the dark glass front door. They come in pairs, triples and quads. And it is Portland and everyone is fit and outdoorsy. Sit facing the steps. You're welcome.

Henry's Pearl District location abruptly shuttered in September, 2019. but they still have a PDX location.

Hellas Restaurant & Lounge
8498 Veterans Highway
Millersville, MD 21108
410-987-0948

Hellas is situated about halfway between Baltimore and Annapolis.
The bar area is large and separate from the dining room.
A large U-shaped bar seats 25 comfortably, and there are shelves at which to lean, and 15 tables or so if you would prefer to eat with your drinks.
Four large pool tables are provided, along with TV's which are not overbearing.
Hellas offers 20 taps of well-selected, mostly American microbrews. Their impressive bottle list numbered in the 70's.
All of the draughts, and many of the bottles are aptly described on the beerlist.
All of my beers were very fresh.
The craft beer scene seems alive and well at Hellas, but you could not have told that from our bartender, who was civil but seemed generally disinterested.
The bar was crowded at happy hour, and many of the patrons seemed to be there for the $1 Michelob Lights, which were selling briskly. The craft brews were holding their own too, however.

Always a favorite with the locals, Hellas Restaurant & Lounge closed for good in 2023.

Dan's Restaurant & Taphouse
3 N Main St.
Boonsboro, MD 21713
(301) 432-5224

Question: For what is Boonsboro, MD famous?
Answer: Two things...it is the site of our nation's first Washington Monument, and...it is the location of Dan's Restaurant & Taphouse.
Dan's sits in a large building, actually what appears to be two buildings, right on Boonsboro's Main Street, and was very busy at lunchtime on this particular Friday.
The bar seats 16 patrons, with room for about 20 more at tables. There is a larger restaurant room to the left, that probably seats as many as the barroom, or maybe more.
Dan's offers 34 rotating taps all conveniently noted on printed beer lists, with price, ABV, and brewery of origin.
The list also separates the brews by style, which is helpful.
In addition to the 34 taps, there are about 30 bottled beers.
The barroom offers 6 HD TVs and a jukebox for your amusement.
Dan's is a welcome find for the Questor, and maybe unexpected in the rural outpost of Boonsboro.
I don't see why we can't have something like Dan's R & T in Catonsville!

Dan's was forced to close in 2022 due to rising legal fees brought on by a customer claiming he was unnecessarily banned.
Dan's leaving will be a great loss to the town of Boonsboro.

Stillwater Grille
13451 McGregor Blvd
Fort Myers, FL 33919
(239) 791-8554

Stillwater Grille is a bar and restaurant in Fort Myers .
Aside from the bar, Stillwater has a more formal dining area that specializes in prime beef and seafood, and a private event room that can be booked.
There is also an attractive patio for outdoor seating.
We were here for the beer.
Stillwater has 48 taps, the vast majority of which rotate.
For those who want to try a sampling, $7 will get three
4-ounce pours.
The patron who can drink 48 different beers at Stillwater becomes a member of The 48 Club .
Hopefully, this does not have to be accomplished in one evening.

Stillwater Grille closed in 2023 due to a drop in sales.

Ale House at Amato's
2501 16th Street,
Denver, CO 80211 Tel: 303.433.9734

The Ale House at Amato's is a beer bar just across the river from the Denver Ballpark district.
The bar is fairly large with seating all around - and lots of space which opens to the patio.
There is also a large outside area upstairs on what would be the roof...
also some family-style rooms with booths beyond the bar.
Loosely affiliated with Breckenridge Brewery, they have 42 taps, mosly local beers.
Popular with the yuppie crowd, the Ale House was very crowded on a Sunday evening.
The food is good and not expensive.

The Ale House is reported as being "temporarily closed" and also as "shuttered."
It's no longer temporary!
The Ale House is closed for good. Reason: Sales fell flat after COVID.

City Hall Tavern/Bistro 33
226 F St
Davis, CA 95618
(530) 756-4556

City Hall Tavern is a new addition to the Davis beer scene. Housed in the town’s old City Hall building, it has a Spartan décor... black ceilings decorated with bicycle tires, apropos for America’s friendliest bike city.
Their website deserves serious consideration as America’s most annoying website.

Tables and chairs are scattered throughout the first floor bar level with generous spacing and limited seating, but it was not very crowded on our Tuesday visit.
Our beer tender was enthusiastically reserved about the nine taps that provided a smattering of styles with several North Coast brews that the beer tender said were made up near Fort Bragg.
"I think not." says me.
"I think so..." as it turns out, the West Coast has one too.

There were about eight west coast taps and I had a couple of new beers from North Coast before I looked at the bottle list. The tavern’s tag line is “33 Bottles of Beer on the Wall” so I leave it to you to decipher how long that beer list was.
But wonder of wonders, joy of joy, there sat Pliny the Elder from Russian River in a 16.9 oz. bottle for $9.
I’ll have one.

Over the next 20 minutes heaven met earth. I have never had Pliny the Elder in a bottle and when I poured my beer the head was so dense I could not suck any beer through it. Curious, I tilted the glass and the surface did not tilt. In an impulsive dare I turned the glass entirely upside down and the beer did not flow out of the glass, not a drop of it. Amazed I began to shake it then pound the bottom like one would a ketchup bottle. No beer escaped. By now thirsty I sat the beer down, made a hole in the dense head with my finger and the I began to quaff.
You do not merely drink Pliny the Elder.
What a beer...its dense head made my own head delightfully dense. "Thank, you, sir, may I have another?"
I could and I did.

You can order food from adjoining Bistro 33.
I got a chicken club...it was tasty but small.
Nevertheless, I was Plinied and did not care.
I do not like City Hall Tavern as a beer joint.
I will, however, patronize the establishment every time I visit Davis, so I might seek wisdom at the feet of Pliny the Elder.

Sometime in 2022, City Hall Tavern/Bistro 33 closed.
It has reopened in the form of a food truck as Bistro 33 On The Go.

Pizzaria Paradiso
OLD TOWN
124 King Street
Alexandria VA
703-837-1245

Pizzaria Paradiso is an upscale pizza house and beer bar with 3 locations in the Washington, DC region.
The front seating area is magnificently lighted from the outside through large panes of glass that I would not want to have to replace.
The decor features lots of light wood and brick, and the tables number about 30. They can be reconfigured to suit customer needs.
One can see a pizza bar in the back, as this is Paradiso's speciality.
But so is beer. Paradiso offers 14 taps and one hand engine. During our visit it was Autumnfest, and all taps were dedicated to Oktoberfests, pumpkin ales and harvest beers. The L-shaped bar seats about 12, and selections are listed on a chalkboard. A menu also painstakingly lists and describes the draft choices as well as the 180 bottled beers that are offered.
Parking can be tricky, but once that is accomplished, Pizzaria Paradiso will fill your beer and pizza needs.
They also have 2 locations in D.C....in Georgetown and Dupont Circle.

It appears as if the Pizzeria Paradiso in Alexandria has permanently closed.
They have other locations in the DC area.

Primebar
155 N Upper Wacker Dr
Chicago, IL 60606
(312) 884-0000

You've been to this bar, in the movies. The guys are late 30s and way better looking than you ever were in your best fantasy. They wear expensive dark suits, white shirts with the collar undone. You know they are important. Their women are preternaturally beautiful with legs that say be fruitful and multiply to the lizard deep within your brain. The bar is modern, airy, lots of windows fronting a busy wide boulevard, the ceiling are way to high to ever approach intimacy. A peanut shell will never see the floor here. In fact a peanut in a shell will never enter the door here.
Padded leather horseshoe booths line the walls. Semicircle tables unite the boothsayers. Track lighting, brick walls, bar tables nicer than your best furniture. The best looking of the good looking guys with their preternatural women holds up two fingers and gorgeous waitress knows exactly what to bring them. You've seen this bar. If you forget what it looks like look up urban chic in the dictionary, it is right there. It is Primebar at 155 West Whacker Drive.

It is hard to believe people really get loaded here. It is just so bright and chic and way too nice to stagger in much less to become boisterous or pass out. Enjoy an acai cosmo or a dirty ceo with your chic-chic friends after a hard day on Whacker. Or, if you are a Questor, have a beer.

This is the part that hurts the most because I really want to dislike this bar—and I do. But, there is always a big but. Let me tell you about my big but. But the beer lists is one of the best in that part of town. And, goddammit, to make things worse the big German pretzels are fantastic. Dammit.

It is back to the movies though for some of the real treasures here because they sell a nice selection of 650 and 750 bottles for twenty-some dollars a pop. I enjoyed Delirium Tremens fresh from the tap at a chic-chic price of $10. When I went to the men's room I wanted to live there.

Primebar is not for friends, it's for associates. Friends head to Stock and Blondes where it is grimey or Monk's where it is too damn noisy, but at least stuff crunches under your feet there when you go in.

Primebar has closed for good.

House of Brewz
201 Old San Carlos Blvd.
Fort Myers Beach FL 33931
(inside Zushi Zushi)
Tel: (239) 244-9485

The House of Brewz is a beer bar several hundred yards from the sand in Fort Myers Beach, FL.
On the tourist street near the bridge, it is tucked between several other bars and souvenier shops.
The tap selection leans heavily on American macros, but with 50 taps there is room for some good craft and import beers.
They also offer 200 different bottle beers.
Modest in size, the bar sits maybe 10 with seats for perhaps 20 in a diner atmosphere, and the big windows make it quite bright inside.
There is a partition which separates this space from an adjoining sushi restaurant.

House of Brewz reports on their website that they are permanently closed.

Iron Horse Taproom
507 7th Street NW
Washington, DC 20004
202-347-7665

The Iron Horse Taproom stands in the beer-friendly Chinatown neighborhood, just south of the Verizon Center. It resembles a college bar in an upscale part of town, and it was crowded with young professionals.
The motorcycle theme seems a little incongruous, but who are we to judge?
If you're here for the beer, and what Questor isn't, Iron Horse has 20 drafts, with only a few macros.
Delerium, Ommegang, Allegash, & Starr Hill were among those craft beers represented.
If it suits you here...stay. If not, the District Chop House brew pub is next door, and Gordon Biersch and RFD are a few blocks away
.

Yelp has it that the Iron Horse Taproom has closed and will reopen as The Boardwalk DC.

Tap House Grill
1506 Sixth Avenue
Seattle, Washington 98101
(206) 816-3314

It was raining. It's Seattle, what did you expect? We wanted a place nearby and the Tap House Grill, no one's first choice, fit the bill. Just up the hill (Q: What isn't? A: Anything that is not just down the hill.) from the Arctic Club hotel and a few blocks over sat this thoroughly modern watering hole.
You enter at street level on 6th Avenue and go down the stairs to a modern characterless tap room and restaurant. Do not lose heart. This place has 160-count ‘em-beers on tap. Good beers. Damn good beers. Goddam good beers. Check out their sample list: http://www.taphousegrill.com/pdf/main_beer_print.pdf I started with a Russian River and damnation I never left it all evening, but my colleagues drank their fill of Rogues and German beers, and a variety of local Washington brews, and we had not even scratched the surface.
The bar undulates against one back wall with taps protruding from a sheet metal bar back. If you sit at one end of the bar you cannot see the other end because of its undulating wave shape. What knucklehead barchitect thought that was a good idea eludes me.
The wait staff looked like a collection of 30-something extras from a daytime soap opera where the women wear bikinis and the guys wear no shirts. Our waitress looked like she could have played the lithe Nubian queen of Themyscira, a very disconcerting effect after a few Russian Rivers. I would have left her two golden bracelets as a tip had I had the means.
Let's summarize so far:the ambience sucks and the beer list is superb. We need a tie-breaker. The food.
The calamari and hummus appetizers were okay, nothing special. Let's be honest, some nights the food just gets in the way of the beer drinking. Not at the Tap Room Grill. There is something to be said for the Grill because I had the best meal I have had in a long time. Mahi-mahi encrusted in macadamia nuts served with pineapple pico de gallo and a sinfully delicious helping of coconut rice and a small medley of vegetables with lime butter...I was tempted to say I'll have another.
Tie breaker goes to the Tap House a must-stop place if you want food to go with your beer.

The Wise Ones at Yelp tell us that Seattle's Tap House Grill is permanently closed.

11th St. Taphouse Bar & Grille
11th Street & The Boardwalk
In the Hampton Inn Oceanfront South
1011 Atlantic Avenue
Virginia Beach VA
23451 • 757-321-8354

The 11th Street Taphouse is beer bar on the boardwalk in Virginia Beach, VA.
The food is mostly pub grub but they have 32 taps; a vast array, something for everyone.
Many are B M/C and the other usual suspects, but they do have about 8 taps dedicated to locals beers.
One finds a sports bar motif, or maybe beach bar, with an adequate bar and lots of seating, even more on the beachfront patio.
It's a wonderful place to spend the end of a day at the beach.
Taphouse Bar & Grille also has 3 venues in Ocean City, MD.

Gah!
Yelp tells us that The 11th Street Taphouse is permanently closed.

Blacksburg Taphouse
607 N Main St
Blacksburg, VA 24060
(540) 552-3023

Blacksburg Taphouse lies on the main drag of North Main Street in enticing Blacksburg, Virginia.
The building is attractively appointed both inside and out.
The L-shaped bar seats about 10 customers. A large number of tables rounds out an innovative seating area.
Blacksburg Taphouse features 33 rotating drafts; some were fairly obscure, namely a mead, an Italian sour, and an American wild ale.
The bottle list numbers about 15, primarily the macros.
The bartenders were welcoming and helpful, and the crowd was overall friendly.
The dining embraces the popular "Farm to Table" idea, and there is a deck for dining outside.
One can also find a cigar bar upstairs.

Yikes! Yelp reports to us that The Blacksburg Taphouse is closed permanently.

Ginger Man
2718 Boll Street
Dallas, TX 75204
(214) 754-8771

Dallas is a big city. No doubt it has great unique beer places. But thank goodness for the Ginger Man downtown. It was a welcome oasis from the free Bud, Bud Light and Miller Lite at the lovely old Magnolia Hotel. Grab a cab and $12 later you're at the Ginger Man, a house-like structure that holds a small but cozy and comfortable bar. The few inside tables were all occupied when we arrived so we sat at a friendly bar with a nice view of the 70 or so taps that included more Belgians than anything, more imports than domestics and overall far more winners that losers. More than a few people sat outside, front and back, in the dead 50s of Dallas winter in January. An upstairs provided additional seating and another bar.

The domestics covered the breadth of the CONUS with Dogfish Head, Left Hand Brewing, The Great Divide and several California beers including some nice Stones. The styles ran to the dark side of the beer kingdom and they had five new draught entries that would please any Questor from the East, at least. The list of bottles was impressive at well over 100 fine additions to the draught list. On a Wednesday night the crowd swelled on the way to whatever was on for the evening then the swelling subsided, leaving plenty of room to spread out.

The food list was less extensive than the beer list, a beer companion with baguette, grapes, cheese, sausage and olives will hold you until dinner will urge you on as it did us. The copper backed bar, through which protrude the lovely taps, each with an authentic handle, gave the place a cozy beery feel.

Many beers will be familiar but how often do you get to drink your way through the Spatens ? The staff was helpful if not overly friendly. Ginger Man is owned by the same person as The Old Monk; try the Ginger Man...it's brighter, livlier, and has a broader range of choices.

Ginger Man is a Texas-based beer chain.

Egads - The Dallas Morning News reports that not only was The Ginger Man closed...it was bulldozed in 2021!

Vito's Pizza and Beer
1734 South Queen Street
York, PA 17403-4612
(717) 843-1143

As it's name implies, Vito's Pizza and Beer is a pizza restaurant in York that offers a fine selection of brews.
The 9 or 10-tap selection features the macros and a few craft surprises. But Vito's real beer strength lies in their 100-bottle selection cooler. There were many craft and import selections here, offered for on- or off-sale consumption. This Questor was able to score a few bombers which I had not seen before.
Vito's has a restaurant side and a bar side; both clean and spacious. The long, hairpin-shaped bar seats about 35. About 10 tables are also available on the bar side, in addition to 6 TV's.
Vito's was an unexpected surprise, and a nice place for a Questor to stop, while in York.

After 58 years in business, both Yelp and The York Daily Record report that Vito's closed due to COVID restrictions.

Pour
114 North Prince Street
Lancaster, PA , 17603
phone: (717) 290-8080

Pour, located on gallery row, is urban upscale and its brick walls and non-representational pieces give it an an artsy intimacy. Textures are mixed between polished and rough, with green back-lighting: the place makes a statement.
Pour also makes a statement with the beer selection. The taps number 10 and are very well-chosen...also featured are about 70 bottles of all sizes and prices. Our barkeep, who manages the brews, was knowledgeable and eager to talk about the choices.
The bar seats 10 with some cozy seating nearby. There is also patio dining in nice weather.

Pour is another fine example of Lancaster's burgeoning beer scene, and a must-stop on any Lancaster Better Beer Crawl.

Alack...multiple sources tell us that Pour closed for good in the summer of 2019.

Federal Taphouse
201 N Queen St
Lancaster , PA 17603
phone: (717) 490-6932

Located in downtown Lancaster, and boasting 100 taps, the
Federal Taphouse has the largest variety of draft beer in the region.
Federal Taphouse has so many beers, that they employ a Tapmaster to supervise the inventory of the brews.
The venue is large, with lots of glass and natural light.
A long and winding bar seats about 20 customers.
A large dining area contains numerous tables where many more guests can eat and drink.
There is also an upstairs, with service and an art gallery.
Our bartender, Emily, was friendly, professional, and extremely helpful in telling us about the Taphouse and its offerings. She helped make our visit fun and informative.
And she really knows about the beers.
Federal Taphouse also has a location in Harrisburg.
Either one is a magnet for the serious beer Questor.

Oh no!
both Yelp and Tripadvisor report that this location of Federal Tap House has closed. There are other locations.

The Beer Monger's
3000 S Queen St, Dallastown, PA 17313
(717) 501-4251

Beer Monger's is a beer bar and bottle shop located on Route 74 between York and Red Lion.
The bottle shop has around 400 different beers, mostly craft and imports, for individual sale.
There is also seating for about 36 patrons at a large community table and several smaller ones.
Pub food is available, and draft beer is also served.
We tried the egg rolls which were scrumptious.
Growlers can be filled.
Next door is a very large barroom, featuring 18 taps.
The bar, which is sizable, can seat about 30 imbibers, and there is other seating, and 2 pool tables.

According to Yelp, Beer Mongers is permanently closed.

Scharf's Schiller Park Restaurant
34 South Crossman Street
Buffalo , New York 14211
716-895-7249

I'm in Buffalo . It's almost Easter. And its 38 freakin degrees. But inside Scharf's Schiller Park Restaurant it's as warm as grandma's fresh babka from the oven.
Scharf's is one of Buffalo's few remaining German restaurants, an oasis of brown and white food in the land of pizza and wings, and another great place to drink beer. On tap during my visit were Spaten Oktoberfestbier Ur-Marzen, Warsteiner, Paulaner
Hefe Weissbier, and Franziskaner Dunkel. Bottles include more from Spaten and Franziskaner – even Optimator. You say you can get those at your local really good beer store, huh? What you can't get there is outstanding home-cooked German food to go with it. Ask for extra gravy. You, my friend, have gone to brown and white food/beer heaven. Finish it off with a “German coffee.” You can play pool or darts or watch the Sabers.
Sure, it's in the hood. Sure, it's hard to get to. Maybe you'll have trouble parking. But you will go and you will like it.

Scharf's closed its doors for good in 2019. We are informed that the place was torn down.
Auf Wiedersehen.

Phoenix Emporium
8049 Main Street
Ellicott City, MD 21043
(410) 465-5665

For a nice selection of abut 160 bottled beers with a modest rotation rate consider the Phoenix Emporium in Historic Ellicott City.
The proprietors have also started a "100 Beer Club" whereby a client can earn recognition and prizes by consuming 100 different bottled beers. A Questor's name is entered in the Big Book and tally is kept...no time limit.
Phoenix also has events such as Firkin Fridays.

After battling through two terrifying floods and re-opening twice, Phoenix Emporium finally closed when the building was slated for removal for flood mitigation.
They have reopened up the street as Phoenix Upper Main.

Centre Park Grill
8808 Centre Park Dr
Columbia, MD 21045
(410) 997-0050

Centre Park Grill is the latest (Spring, 2015) craft beer-friendly bar to open in the Columbia/Ellicott City area.
The decor sports beautiful wooden floors, and plenty of glass and stone.
The rectangular bar seats about 20, and the spacious dining area has numerous tables.
Centre Park has 12 taps.
All of them rotate, and none are wasted on macrobrews.
The bottle list numbers over 20, and appears well-chosen.
Staff were friendly and attentive, and manager Tony was eager to talk about the beer and the food.
And check this out...Happy Hour is 3-6 on weekdays.
Drafts are 1/2 price!

Both Yelp and Opentable tell us that the Centre Park Grill has closed for good.

305 High Street
Cambridge, MD 21613

High Street Gastropub is located in charming and scenic downtown Cambridge, on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
The barroom was sunny and cozy on this beautiful fall day of our visit.

Ten tables round out the seating in the barroom, and another dining room has tables for possibly another 30 customers.
High Spot features 6 well-chosen taps, all of which rotate.
A bottle list offers 32 more beers, most of which appear to be bombers.
The High Spot Gastropub provides food that is fresh and local, in an atmosphere that is casual but classy.
High Spot is a restful stop on the way to the Maryland and Delaware beaches.
In fact, Cambridge may be a beer destination in itself.

Multiple sources inform us the The High Spot is permanently closed.

The Distillery
416 West Liberty Street
Savannah , Georgia 31401
912-236-1772

…and you can't be a real city unless you have a brewery and a beer bar. It helps if you have some kind of a hockey team, or a recycling program, but at the very least you need a beer bar.”

While Frank never had a chance to finish his thought, at last Savannah has its beer bar. The renovated Distillery opened in November 2008, offering twenty-one taps of American craft beers and a token Belgian (beer, that is). Another forty or so beers are available in bottles. Outstanding picks on a recent visit included drafts of Avery's Kaiser (imperial Oktoberfest) and Stone's Oaked Arrogant Bastard (welcome to Georgia, Stone!). If you can't decide then check out the beer flights (sweet, hoppy, “sunset”) and even the beer blends. There's bar food and screenings of silent films; owner Michael Volen promises a variety of entertainment in the near future. The Distillery – another reason to be in Savannah .

Yikes! Both Yelp and Tripadvisor report that The Distillery is closed for good.

Pickled Pig Pub
Harbor Square
18756 Coastal Highway
Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971
(302) 645-5444

The Pickled Pig Pub is located in a strip center on the Route 1 highway, a couple of miles north of downtown Rehoboth Beach. It is one of the establishments that makes Rehoboth the Beer Destination of the Eastern Shore. Pickled Pig offers 14 taps, the majority of which rotate, and about 50 bottles. There is also a hand engine with one beer in cask. Patrons sit at a large U-shaped bar or at tables, and most seem to be here for the beer. Our barkeep was knowledgeable and helpful. Beers were also served in the appropriate glasses. Joining the Pub Club will get you 20-ounce pours for the price of a pint. Pickled Pig also hosts beer dinners during the off-season.

Sadly, in March of 2021, Pickled Pig was forced to close, another victim of COVID.

Gold Dust Lounge. They are no longer on Powell Street. The new venue retains much of the look and feel of the nearly 100 year old spot.

I steered some friends to the Gold Dust and said. “Let’s go in here.” A semi-respectable native woman of some vintage turned without prompting and said, “We call it the toilet.” It has the best beer selection in the Union Square area. Ten great European taps and a good selection of bottles make this a must stop for a Questor in Gaytown.

It was decorated by a whore with no taste at all...where were the gays when we needed them? Red velvet furniture, couches, and booths; nude paintings, cherubs on the ceiling and a clientele that is ready to go. Entertaining bartenders who ignite lemon rinds and fling bottle caps 90 mph make this a must stop. Everybody needs to use the toilet sooner or later.

Multiple sources report that The Gold Dust shuttered up for good in 2019, after 54 years in business.

T-Bonz Grille & Pub
4910 Waterloo Road
Ellicott City, MD 21043
410-461-4748

T-Bonz Grille & Pub is described as a "neighborhood hideaway" and that serves as an apt description. Tucked behind a strip center in a nouveau rural part of Ellicott City, T-Bonz proved a dark, cool respite on a 100-degree day. T-Bonz has 40 taps, most of which are microbrews.
They also offered about a dozen macro bottles. The L-shaped bar seats about 15, and there are a large number of booths and tables.

T-Bonz closed for good in November, 2018.
It has since been remodeled and reopened as HoCo Brew Hive.

The Nickel Taphouse
1604 Kelly Ave.
Baltimore, MD 21209
Phone: (443) 869-6240

The Nickel Taphouse is a beer bar in Mt. Washington's cozy restaurant district, brought to you by the same people who own Birroteca...another great beer bar several miles south in Hampden.
The 32 taps are all craft beers, and well chosen, with a number of local offerings.
Upscale casual is the ambience here.
The large L-shaped bar seats mumerous patrons, with tables and booths for many more.
The prices are listed, which is a big plus.
This is the first venue in charming Mt. Washington to be written up as a beer bar.
Let's hope there are more.

Now there is one less.
Nickel Tap House poured its last pint and served its last meal in October, 2018.

Rheingarten
3998 Jefferson Davis Highway Stafford, VA 22554
Phone: 703-221-4635

If scary puppets, brown and white food and liters of good German beer served in an authentic German atmosphere are your idea of a good beer night, then the Rheingarten Restaurant in Stafford Virginia is a must stop for you, especially if you are a traveling Questor.
It is easy to miss this Bierstube, as it sets off the road and is marked only by an easy-to-miss sign.
But let's trust any good German beer nut to follow the directions and find this place. Petra was our server.
She was too German for Germany and landed in Stafford County with an attitude to boot.
She turned out to be a most delightful beer and dinner guide.
There were three taps...Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen, Hofbrau Original and Weltenburger Klastor, a dunkel.
We chose the dunkel.
She said pint, half liter or man-sized in a way that left us no choice; we went the full liter and never regretted it.
The brown and white food was sehr gut and the second liter of hefe was perfect. Finish it off with an apple strudel and it is a lot cheaper than a trip to Germany.

Ach du lieber!
Zum Rhinegarten thanks their patrons for 25 years of serving them and is now closed.

Maplewood Grill
Danor Plaza
132 Branch Rd SE
Vienna, VA 22180
(703) 281-0070

Sitting inside the small shopping center of Danor Plaza in the heart of Vienna, Maplewood Grill's exterior does not overwhelm you.
Inside, however, is a different story.
The decor, with lots of wood, provides an elegant yet casual feel.
The restaurant is divided into several dining rooms, and the cuisine is described as classic American.
Everything I've ever ordered there has been superb.
But...we are not here to talk about the food.

There are 8 carefully selected taps, and none of them are wasted.
On my latest visit, there were products from Devil's Backbone, Brooklyn, Green Flash, Boulevard, and others.
There was even a selection from Caboose Brewing Company which is right in the neighborhood.

The Maplewood is permanently closed.

The Industry
1401 E Moyamensing Ave
Philadelphia , PA 19147
(215) 271-9500

The Industry is a neighborhood bar in South Philly.
The L-shaped bar seats a dozen patrons, and a long community table maybe 16 more. There are about 15 tables in addition.
The Industry is decorated with lots red, wood, and attractive windows looking out over the environs that I was told was known as Pennsport.

The Industry is a great neighborhood watering hole to which you could proudly bring your friends.
We could use one of these in Catonsville.

Still no great beer bar in Catonsville, and now The Industry is gone too!
The Industry closed its doors at the end of 2017.

Alla Spina
1410 Mt Vernon St
Philadelphia, PA

(215) 600-0017

Alla Spina, meaning "from the tap", is an Italian flavored gastropub with an excellent beer bar just off of Broad Street.
The large modern bar seats about 20, and many more patrons can be seated at the numerous tables of all sizes.
Two big screen TVs are there if you need them, but are certainly not intrusive.
The taps number 20, and all rotate.
There are also 50-60 bottles offered.
A Saison-fest was going on, and about half of the taps were Saisons.
Late in the afternoon on an Easter Sunday, all the bar patrons were drinking draft beer, and seemed knowledgable about their selections.
Needless to say, Tim, our barkeep, was also quite helpful with anything we needed to know about beer or the neighborhood.
Alla Spina has themed beer flights which vary by the day.
The prices were given for all the draft beers on the beer list, and my Victory Saison was delicious and reasonably priced.
Be careful with the mixed drinks, though.
These were surprisingly pricey.

"After five years of serving the fine folk of Philadelphia, we have closed our doors.
Thank you for your support, Cheers! "

The Drafting Room closed for good in November, 2017.

Green Dragon Bistro & Brewpub
928 SE 9th Street
Portland, Oregon 97214
503.517.0660

Green Dragon, owned by Rogue, does not make its own beer despite the name, but it is one of the three points of the Beermuda Triangle on Portland's eastside (along with the Lucky Lab and Roots).
The Dragon makes creative and fun use of the old warehouse layout that typifies the Beermuda Triangle.
Big open space means shuffleboard and picnic tables and old coldbox doors done up in slate boards and faux hippies and maybe a couple or three retired real ones.
They stock 25-30 bottles but are out of the one you really want.
There are about 20 taps and a greater variety in brand names than in styles.
This venue had more of a neighbrhood feel to it than any of the other places we visited; oddly it was in less of a neighborhood than the other stops.
A home for the homeless and a beer for the beerless.
An Old Rasputin nitro was the perfect way to bid farewell to the undisputed Beervana.

Yelp reports that The Green Dragon has closed for good.

Pixel Lounge
107 1/2 Dryden Rd
Ithaca, NY 14850
(607) 277-7529

Look in the alley behind the Subway in Collegetown, and you'll find Pixel...all 24 taps and about 18 bottles.

You won't find it now!
In the summer of 2018, our Ithaca correspondent reported that Pixel had closed.

Metropolitan Coffeehouse & Wine Bar
902 South Charles Street
(410) 234-0235

Located in Federal Hill, the Metro is a wine bar that takes beer very seriously. With 6 taps downstairs and six taps upstairs (when open), the Metro offers an excellent selection of microbrews, Belgians, and other imports. The taps are well-chosen and seem to be well cared for, and the menu also offers about 50 bottles.
Thursdays are firkin nights, and will draw a crowd of more serious beer drinkers.
The staff was extremely friendly and the crowd is mainly local urbanites. Food creative and reasonably priced. You need to check this one out for yourself.

Sadly, the Metropolitan closed at the end of 2017, after serving great food and beer for over 13 years.

Alewife
21 N Eutaw Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
(410) 545-5112

Alewife, a Baltimore beer destination, is housed in what was originally the Eutaw Savings Bank Building, dating from 1857. The bar's interior pays due homage to the stately structure, with lots of dark wood and tasteful decoraton. There is lots of seating on the first floor at the long staple-shaped bar, stools, and tables. A balcony overlooks the large bar room, and the third floor contains a second bar. The clientele seemed to be a mix of 30-plus beer sophisticates.
But let us get to the brews. Alewife boasts 40 taps, with a selection that includes many West Coast ales and imports, especially Belgians. There are additionally about 50 well-chosen bottles. The wait staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, having undergone a rigorous 12-hour tasting workshop. The beer list in encyclopediac, and populated with best-in-class, irrespective of region.
My first visit to Alewife provided me with ample beer choices and a great time. I trust my next visit will be in the near future.

Alewife abruptly closed for good in August, 2018 !

Parts & Labor
2600 N. Howard St.
Baltimore, MD 21218
443-873-8887

Parts & Labor is a restaurant, beer bar, and butcher shop in Baltimore's Remington neighborhood.
They are billed as "serving the region's finest meats from the hearth."
As many items as possible from Parts & Labor are locally sourced, and that includes the beer.
Parts & Labor offers 20 taps, and the ones not from Maryland are from nearby in the Mid-Atlantic region.
About 20 bottles round out the beer list.
All the beers we had were extremely fresh and served in appropriate glassware.
The large, broad bar seats approximately 20 patrons.
Five large community-style tables seat 8 each.

Parts & Labor closed up shop for good on August 5, 2018.
A pop-up bar opened up in the same space, but only for 60 days.

Brew'd Pub
5018 Old National Pike, Frederick, MD 21702
(240) 575-6046

Located just west of Frederick,
Brew'd Pub opened on Thanksgiving Day, 2013, in an historic 230-year old building built beside the National Road, before the Road was completed and designated as such.
The building was purchased by John Hagan in 1830, and he used it as a tavern, giving it the name (Hagan's Tavern) that stayed with the building for almost two centuries until the current owners took over.
The interior has been beautifully restored, keeping its colonial-era charm while incorporating a completely modern kitchen, dining areas and beer bar.
The bar has 21 taps, each with a continuously rotating upscale microbrew. Some preference is given to a couple of local breweries, but the overall beer selection is varied, interesting, and always changing.
The ownership and staff are true beer aficionados, and convey their enthusiasm to novice and connoisseur alike.
Particularly impressive to this Questor was that the beer menu on an electronic display lists not only name of the beer, but also the serving size, the price, the ABV, and the IBU. I have never seen this much attention given to a beer menu.

Brew'd Pub is reported as permanently closed.

The Barn Taphouse
9527 Harford Rd
Parkville , MD 21234
Phone: (410) 668-2276

The Barn is located on Harford Road just outside the beltway.
The location is a Baltimore landmark and has been, in previous incarnations, a hotel, a dance hall, and a saloon.
The Barn has been a well-known crab house since 1982.
The rectangular bar seats about 30, and the barroom also contains lots of tables and booths.
There are over 20 taps, but it is unlikely that a Questor will find any surprises.
The tap list included a Stone, a Dogfish, and a coupla locals. (see photo)

Our sources inform us that the Barn has closed.

It may now be called The Charred Rib.

21st Street Taphouse
390 21st St.
Vero Beach ,  Florida 32960
(772) 217-2936

21st Street Taphouse was created to be a neighborhood bar, in the tradition of those from the working towns such as Chicago , Detroit , or Cleveland .
It was intended to be a spot where locals could come and get a bite to eat, watch a game, and drink with their friends.
Aside from a full bar, the Taphouse boasts 48 taps, with many being local brews hailing from such Florida breweries as 3 Daughters, Big Storm, Cigar City, Due South, Funky Buddha, and others.
When in Vero Beach , and looking for a large selection of Florida beers under one roof, 21 st Street can't be missed.

Well, now you can do nothing but miss it.
Our sources report to us in 2018 that the 21st Street Taphouse is permanently closed.

Lefty O'Doul's
At Union Square
333 Geary Street
San Francisco, CA 94102
Tel: (415) 982-8900

This is a San Francisco bar started by a baseball player who washed out as a pitcher with a 1-1 record. He reinvented himself as a hitter with a .349 liftetime average. His namesake bar, Lefty O'Douls's, has a dozen taps, nine of them good Europeans and microbrews. A large cutout of Lefty & the Babe hangs over the bar.San Francisco sports photos and a dinner buffet overshadow the beer and miserable décor of this establishment. Dark and dingy with a piano surrounded by stools you can find Big Daddy, Fat Tire, Bitburger, Guinness and many other tasty beers struggling to outsell the Bud trio.

Lefty O'Doul's closed in January, 2017, due to a " bitter dispute between its landlord and operator, with each asserting rights to ownership of the baseball-focused establishment's name and memorabilia."
In 2018 a new incarnation of the venue is purported to be opening in Fisherman's Wharf.

East Girard Gastropub
200 E Girard Ave
Philadelphia , PA 19125
(267) 761-9343

'Twas a rainy, windy night on the east edge of Philly. We could not find the East Girard Gastropub as the exterior sported no signage. But when we did enter, it was worth the search.
EGGastropub offered 10 great beers on tap, about 20 bottles, great food, and ample hospitality. Samples of the beer were cheerfully given.
The bar seats 16 or so, and 10 tables of various sizes accomodate about 30 more.
The rest room was graffiti-friendly.
As mentioned, the beers and food were outstanding. By the time you make your visit, the sign will probably up.

The East Girard Gastropub closed in 2016 to make way for a french fry shop.

Bierstube
206 Market St
Philadelphia , PA 19106
(215) 922-2958

Bierstube is a German-themed bar on Philly's bustling Market Street in Old City.
Bierstube is a sister bar of Eulogy Belgian Tavern, and replaced the Beneluxx Tasting Room that used to be nearby.
The bar seats about 10 patrons; a dozen tables and a "mirror bar" seat a lot more.
On a Tuesday evening, all the drinkers were male, and all were sitting at the bar drinking beer.
The 16 taps are well-selected, and center around German imports, although there are other craft beers.
The bottle list offers another 150 varieties.
Of note on this list were the "Scheisse Biers" listed at the bottom. This portion of the menu was for the few macros that are offered. If you need a translation, ask a German.
Concerning the food, we can state that the knockwurst and Wiener schnitzel were excellent.
The young lady who served us was extremely personable and eager to talk about the beers and other topics.
Bierstube should be a stop on any Market Street pub crawl.

Ach! It is reported to us that Bierstube is closed for good.

John Steven, Ltd.1800 Thames St.
Fells Point
410-327-5561

John Steven Ltd. is so renowned for being a fine bar & restaurant, it may get overlooked for having a lot of fine beers. Don't make this error! With about 20 taps leaning toward local products, and maybe 25 bottles, John Steven is definitely a great place to go for a beer. And the food is great, too.

Aw, rats! John Steven closed in 2014.
There were plans to re-open, but nothing has happened so far.

Jack's Bistro
3123 Elliott Street
Baltimore, MD 21224
410-878-6542

You may remember this venue as Buddy's, but the beer selection and food quality have sure taken a step up since then. Jack's features 8 taps and about 65 bottles, a well-chosen assortment of Belgians, other imports, and microbrews. The staff members were knowledgeable and helpful in making selections. The bar seats a dozen; there are three booths and numerous tables for dining. The place was packed and hopping on a Saturday night. The food is gourmet quality, and prices were high for both food and beer...having stated this, what we ate and drank were worth the cost. Jack's offers a beer dinner for $20 every Thursday.

Jack's Bistro will be closing sometime in 2017.
You can read about it here.

Liam Flynn's Ale House
22 W. North Avenue
Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.
(410) 244-8447

Liam Flynn's Ale House is in Baltimore's arts district in an area known as Station North.
The Bar is Irish by category, but doesn't beat you over the head with it. Instead, Liam Flynn's pays homage to Old Baltimore, with a bar crafted from an old bowling alley, and materials from the venerable but defunct Chesapeake Restaurant.
The interior is clean and spacious...well, it's brand new. The bar seats about a dozen, with seating for 20 more at tables. An upper level has more tables, and darts.
But beer is why we were in attendance, so let's get to that.
Liam's sports 13 taps, 2 of which are hand engines. The drafts are well-chosen and well-cared for. Natty Bohs were $1.00. There was an array of about 18 bottles, covering a few macros and some ales.
Our Oriole-capped barkeep was extremely personable and willing to talk about the bar.
Some of us waited a long time for Liam Flynn's Ale House to make its debut. It was worth it.

As of 2017, Liam Flynn's is permanently closed.

Anthony's Micro Pub
225 North 2nd Street
Harrisburg , PA 17109
phone: (717) 238-2009

Anthony's Micro Pub is a beer bar on Harrisburg's colorful strip known as Restaurant Row.
Anthony's boasts Harrisburg's longest line-up of 80 taps; those drinkers who have trouble choosing can get a 4-sample selection of different drafts for $12.
Anthony's also offers about 50 different bottles for on-premise consumption or carry-out, and...fills growlers.

The staff, both on and off duty, were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the brews, and interested to help with selection and state their preferences.
On your next visit to Harrisburg, stroll along 2nd Street and make Anthony's Micro Pub one of your stops.

Anthony's Micro Pub and Pizza permanently closed in 2016.
It is supposed to be replaced by The Blind Tiger Micro Pub.

Cobblestone's
205 South George Street
York, Pennsylvania 17403

717-848-FUNN

Cobblestone's was the first beer bar in York...and it's a great place to visit. It's a huge venue in an old Knights of Columbus hall, so there is plenty of space for electronic games, TV's, poker games, a huge bar, and about 63 different draft beers. Needless to say, the selection is diverse, and food and beverage manager Lucas told us that the taps are well-cared for, and that about half of the taps rotate. They have a compact little beer book telling what's on tap, and what beers are coming up . They also fill growlers.
So if you are in the habit of bypassing York on I-83, you may want to re-think your travel plans, and make some time for a stop at Cobblestone's.

Cobblestone's closed 2016 and everything was auctioned off to pay delinquent taxes.

The Barleycorn
697 Haywood Rd.
Asheville, NC 28806
(828) 774-5598

The Barleycorn is a gastropub on the east end of the Haywood Road corridor in West Asheville.
In their own words, The Barleycorn "is a neighborhood joint with global influences...The Barleycorn takes pub grub to the next level. "
The bar seats about a dozen customers, with room for many more at a large indoor dining area.
As it was a pleasant evening, we opted to move outside after a beer at the bar.
Juniper, the mixlologist and beer maven, and Betts, our bartender, were extremely knowledgeable, and helpful with our Quest.
The Barleycorn offers 16 taps and 4 bottles for the macros.
The taps included many locals, including a Twin Leaf Luminosity Tripel, and a Green Man Experimental Hop beer.
I was not disappointed with my vertical kebab, and would love to return.

But I won't be!
The Barleycorn closed abruptly in September, 2016. It was supposed to be temporary, but has turned out to be permanent.

The Chapter House
400 Stewart Ave
Ithaca, NY 14850-4559
(607) 277-9782

The Chapter House has the feel of a frat house...in a good way.
They have 48 well-selected taps leaning heavily towards New York beers, with some other U.S. micros and imports.
Corey, our bartender, was knowledgeable and very helpful in filling us in on the local beer scene. The rooms had a comfortable and well-worn feel to them.
The time between this beer and your next beer could be filled playing pool or other games.
The Chapter House is just one of the great bars in Ithaca, a landmark college town and beer Mecca that should not be missed by any Questor in the Finger Lakes area.

Sadly, The Chapter House burned down in 2015.
Plans were made to rebuild, but as of 2-17, things are in doubt.

Always Ron's
29 North Burhans Blvd.
Hagerstown, MD 21740
301-797-7887

Unassuming on the outside, cozy and comfortable on the inside, Always Ron's has long been a Hagerstown favorite for great food at good prices in a friendly atmosphere. Only recently have they become the area's best beer bar. With 24 taps, all of which rotate, they certainly have earned that distinction. Lagunitas, North Coast, Laughing Dog, and Saison DuPont were just a few of the names that graced this well-chosen selection on the afternoon of my visit.

Always Ron's motto has always been, "Where good friends and good food meet." They are going to have to add a line about the beer.

Always is not forever.
Always Ron's was sold in 2015, and in 2017 both Yelp and Foursquare websites reported them to be CLOSED.

Hideaway
1913 Dudoit Ln.
Honolulu , HI 96815

We all want to know who are the doctors the doctors go to. Hideaway is the bar off duty bartenders and hookers go to. Every tourist town has at least one of these places. It is a dive bar for the professionals that is tolerant of a touron with money to spend. “Sunday morning, go see the Reverend”, I was told. “When?” I asked, “around midnight?” That is Sunday morning, right? Wrong. Seven AM or so the Reverend comes on duty. And so I did. It was 730 AM as I turned the corner into a dingy alley (just around the corner from the Irish Rose Saloon). The small parking lot was full, the juke box was blaring and bodies moved behind the windows. In I walked to a full-blown everybody's already drunk party. Working girls with their taxi flag dark playing darts. Working guys seat-belted to their bar stools. The odd biker over there. Bottles held vertical, the better to drain you with my dear. It is grungy with tacky red lights ringing the back of a bar most frat houses would be ashamed of. I saw no taps but that is because I could not really see the bar, there may have been one, but I guarantee you've had it before. PBR's rule here. This a bar. It ain't about beer. It is all about the lifestyle. Drunk at 7:30 Sunday morning and the Reverend is tending to your spiritual needs if it comes in 12 ounces or a shot glass. That is the lifestyle. This is the only bar I have ever reviewed where I didn't have several beers. I confess, I didn't have any. I could not merge into the lane with these folks doing 70 with no safety margin. I walked around, took in the show, climbed past the stack of cardboard boxes propping the door open and left. A green bottle would be a way exotic beer here. So I went back one night. It is a bar that is on the low edge of my kind of place. Women and guts with elaborately tattooed sleeves, lacey tops, and desperate lives. This is not where you go for beer; in an act of grand defiance I had a Heineken. It is where you go because the next stop is the graveyard. Or your hotel room. It is decadent, it is dirty, it is for hard core drinkers. Questors need to check their principles at the door. A Heinie was $3.50 in Waikiki...that absolves a multitude of sins. Can I hear an amen?

In the summer of 2017, both Yelp and Foursquare websites reported that The Hideaway Bar was closed for good.

Pig & Fish
236 Rehoboth Avenue
Rehoboth Beach, DE
302.227.7770

Pig & Fish is an outstanding beer bar in Rehoboth, and the sister establishment of The Pickled Pig just up the highway.
Pig & Fish offers 12 well-chosen drafts.
Being as they were celebrating Oktoberfest, there were several German imports, including a Paulaner Celebration firkin.
About a dozen patrons can sit at the dark wood-topped bar. There is but one TV, and that was on mute, so there was nothing to interfere with one's imbiblical conversation. Just have a good time, talk with your friends, and watch the crowd walk by on Rehoboth Avenue.
Tyler, our barkeep, was very helpful in explaining the beers, the bar, and making suggestions.
With about 10 tables in the dining area, Pig & Fish is an excellent place to have a meal or just partake of a few beers.

Sadly, we were informed that as of April, 2017, The Pig & Fish had closed its doors for good.

Dawson's
105 N 1st St
Dixon, CA 95620

If you're a Questor and you find yourself in Dixon, look for Dawson's where Heather sets them up and local folk knock them down. Three beers on tap, Bud, Bud Light and Sierra Nevada assure you'll score few new beers here and the seven bottled beers reenforce the point with Heineken being the exotic one. But Dixon is not big and this is one of the few places where you get to urinate in a trough with constantly running water. They say 80% of California's water goes to irrigation; if Dawson's is any clue, the other 20% goes to flushing. But in Dixon, it's gotta be Dawson's. Tell Heather the cute one says hi.

As of 2017, Dawson's was reported as permanently closed

D.A.'s Regional Food and Drink
810 7th Street NW
Washington, DC
202-289-2030

Hundreds of beers (mostly bottles) from scores of countries, right across the street from the Metro, in MCI country. With Washington's largest tap selection, RFD boasts 30 taps up front and 10 more in the back. Plus about 300 different bottles. Go 'round the world without leaving your seat. Selections include lagers, ales, hefeweizens, Belgians, and various other imports and micros. If you're a dedicated beer enthusiast, you may want to ask proprietor Dave Alexander if he has anything special planned, such as tastings or slams. RFD is a super beer bar in an exciting beer neighborhood.
Or so it was!
RFD closed for good in the Summer of 2017.

Le Garage
911 W 36th St
Baltimore, MD 21211
(410) 243-6300

To enter Le Garage, a French restaurant and beer bar in Hampden, one moves from a street entrance on The Avenue, down a ramp to a subterranean, low-lit enclave.
A long, L-shaped bar seats about 15 patrons, and the bar stools are actually high-backed chairs and extremely comfortable.

While your typical French restaurant may be a bit pricey, Le Garage describes itself as "approachable" for the working neighborhood of Hampden.
Le Garage's signature menu item is their frites, which can be ordered with a variety of dipping sauces.
Needless to say, we were there for their beer list.
Le Garage boasts 14 well-selected drafts, concentrating on local, Belgian, and German brews. Le Garage also offers a bottle list numbering about 40.
The beer menu was user-friendly, in that the country of origin, style, size, and price were listed.
Beers were served in their proper glasses.
Le Garage appears to be a comfortable, industrial-chic getaway...

Whoops - not any more.
As of May, 2017, Le Garage has closed.
According to their consulting manager, "ownership has decided to refresh and rebrand the space...
Bon voyage, Le Garage.

Royal Mile Pub
2407 Price Avenue
Wheaton, MD 20902
301.946.4511

Just off the main drag of Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, MD, lies the Royal Mile Pub. Friendly and unpretentious, Royal Mile offers 10 taps and about 60 bottles of beer. Although they offer delicious and interesting Scottish food and other pub fare, they are very serious about the beer here. The selection is well-chosen to reflect the best in German, British, and Scottish beers, and American microbrews as well. The staff was friendly and helpful, and, very importantly, the beers were served in their correct glasses.
Royal Mile is also a haven for lovers of single malt scotch, but that would be a topic for another website.

The Royal Mile closed, re-opened, then closed for good in 2014.

Leesburg Beer Company
2-C Loudon St. SW
Leesburg , VA 20175
571 442 8124

Leesburg Beer Company is located just off of King Street in beautiful, downtown Leesburg...Virginia's hidden beer gem.
As evidenced by the name, LBC was originally slated to be a tied house for the Corcoran Brewing Company, which is just about 10 miles away in rural Loudon County.
Local liquor laws scotched these plans, however, so patrons must make do with the 6 rotating craft beer taps, which at the time of our visit were very well-chosen.
LBC serves beer and wine only - no hard liquor.
Hark!
Leesburg Beer and Wine Company is closed. It may be re-opening, but no one seems clear as to what it will be...don't think a beer bar...maybe BBQ?

Elliott's Pour House
3728 Hudson Street
Brewers Hill, Baltimore
410.276.2200

Utilizing a 20-tap tower salvaged from the late Crabby Dick's of Fells Point, owner Jeff Mason has begun elevating
Elliott's Pour House
, located east of Canton in Brewers Hill, into a craft beer destination.
Jeff now has 12 craft beers on tap, and plans to have 20 in the near future.
Concentrating on American microbrews, EPH has the likes of Troegs, Smuttynose, & North Coast represented.
There are also about 20 bottles.
EPH has a neighborhood feel, with a pool table and other activities.
Local beer enthusiasts owe it to themselves to throw back a few at Elliott's Pour House.
But they can't do it now! Elliott's Pour House is closed.

Philadelphia Bar & Restaurant
120 Market St.
Philadelphia PA 19106
215-925-7691

We have been to this neighborhood twice in order to review PBR.
Both times we have been disappointed in that the joint was closed for a "private party."
Our friend Jordan from Revolution House told us that we were indeed well-informed; PBR is the best beer bar in the 'hood.
I know...we should call ahead. Doesn't matter because there are so many other great places within walking distance that it is no great loss.
But it would be nice to get a crack at PBR's extensive tap and bottle list.
Na ja. Maybe next time.
Nope! There is no next time! Philadelphia Bar and Restaurant is reported closed.

Kona Brewing Company
Honolulu International Airport.
300 Rodgers Blvd.
Honolulu, HI 96819
www.konabrewingco.com

It is my hope that one day Questors will know the world's best beer airports.  I have an early nominee.  Kona beers are a lot better on draft in Hawaii than anywhere else in the world. Go figure.

The airport bar had Longboard Island Lager, Big Wave Golden Ale, Fire Rock Pale Ale, and Pipeline Porter.  Every one of these beers is tasty. The Longboard is their lightest and when you get it good and fresh it is as refreshing as its European cousins.  The Big Wave tends to be their light beer and it is.  'Nuff said.  Fire Rock is a very nice pale ale that invariably leaves a photo opp glass, nicely ringed in beer history.  Our mama san waitress was the best of our stay.  Friendly, smiling, Polynesian plump in her mumu and she was already leied so that took the pressure off.
Don't go the airport for a Kona, it is all over the island. But if you're at the airport go for a Kona.
No Kona Pub at the airport anymore!
Kona still has pubs on Oahu and on the Big Island, but no longer has an airport outlet.

JD's Smokehouse
3000 O'Donnell Street
Baltimore, MD 21224
(410) 675-4029

Boasting 56 taps, JD's Smokehouse has one of the largest draft beer line-ups in town.
Situated on Canton's Square, JD's has two large bars downstairs and numerous tables at which to sit.
Being as this was an early Saturday evening in late summer, JD's numerous large television screens were being given a work-out by the college football and baseball crowds, giving the establishment a sports bar atmosphere...blah, blah, blah...

As of the spring of 2015, JD's changed ownership and format.
Now known as Jokers and Thieves, the one-time smokehouse is more of a trendy bar.
They seem to be popular and have good food, but are no longer a beer bar.

The Farmers' Cabinet
1113 Walnut Street
Philadelphia , PA 19107
(215) 923-1113

The Farmers' Cabinet closed in the
summer of 2014.
They owed $1.3 million !

I had remembered hearing about The Farmers' Cabinet chielfy because they brew their own artisanal beers at the old Shenandoah Brewing Company in Alexandria, VA...a place where Yonan and Walter had previously brewed on several occasions.
I had also read that they have an outstanding selection of European craft brews...maybe the most diverse in town. I had vowed to visit the establishment on our next trip to Philly.
I awaited with eager anticipation.
Unfortunately, we picked the wrong season to visit, and the wrong day to visit, as well as the wrong time of the wrong day of the wrong season.
Other than that, our timing was impeccable.

After walking six blocks to the restaurant, when we opened the door, we were shocked to find a swarming sea of humanity, fully engaged in drinking and conversing, despite intense heat.
In short, the atmosphere was terribly crowded, distractingly loud, and uncomfortably hot.
The hostess was friendly and polite, telling us that this was the theatre crowd enjoying a "Wednesday night special" and that the place would be emptying out very quickly.
This turned out to be overly optimistic, and incorrect. The theatre crowd, as it turned out, preferred the show here.
In all honesty, from what I could see, The Farmers' Cabinet is a great beer venue, but it was impossible for us to enjoy it. We had to shout at the bartender, who had obviously been affected by the heat and the crowd. It took quite awhile to get our beers.
The one beer I was able to enjoy was delicious. Called their Struise/Cabinet Cab Ale, it drank like a bitter and was smooth and tasty. My only complaint was that for $7 it was a pretty small pour.
I wanted to follow it up with an Everlasting Bright Farmhouse IPA, but that was not to be. It was too hot, and so loud that we couldn't converse with the friends we had met there.

I wanted to love the place, but wound up being terribly disappointed.
I am certainly not trying to dissuade the reader from visiting here, just advising that they should pick different conditions.
I guess this is the type of establishment Yogi Berra had in mind when he said, "Nobody goes there any more...it's too crowded."

Townhouse Kitchen + Bar
1350 Lancaster Street
Baltimore, MD 21231
(443) 268-0323

Townhouse closed in January, 2014, before its second anniversary. The owners reportedly owed $235,000 in back rent.
At that location now is The Mussel Bar & Grille, also a beer bar.

With a name like Townhouse, we expected something charming and residential. Townhouse Kitchen + Bar ended up giving us a very different vibe altogether.
Townhouse is slick, urban, and upscale.
Situated in a position that could be construed as on the water in Harbor East, Townhouse has one large barroom with a long, U-shaped bar that seats 40 drinkers, as well as two sectioned-off areas that can be reserved for parties or used for larger groups.
The crowd, which during our visit consisted largely of groups of single men and women, (singles - make note) could also be seated at one of the many tables of various sizes.
The venue could seat nearly 400 patrons.
The taps number 40, with mostly all being American craft brews. There were also about six bottle choices for the macro drinkers.
Samples were cheerfully offered.
We had 4 different appetizers that were tasty and reasonably priced during the 3-7 Happy Hour.
Think loud... animated conversation, vibrant background music, amplified by the acoustics of high ceilings with exposed wiring and ductwork, made intimate talk difficult. But this seemed to accentuate Townhouse's attraction.
I can't say how many people were there for the beer selection, but after only 4 weeks in business, Townhouse seems to be a popular meeting places for young local professionals.

Ironwood Tavern
962 Edwards Ferry Rd NE
Leesburg , VA 20176-3317
phone: (703) 777-6333

Ironwood Tavern resides in a stand-alone building in a shopping center on the edge of Leesburg, Virginia.
The large rectangular bar seats about 25 patrons and also houses 10 flat screen TV's. There are numerous tables for diners.
The taps number 24, and all save 3 are craft beers, including several native Virginia brews.
All the styles are represented, including pale ale, IPA, amber, porter and Belgian-types.
One who wants a smattering of styles can order a 4-glass sampler.
The small bottle selection consist of macros.

Ironwood is ready to entice craft beer lovers even further, and will soon add an expanded bottle list. They will begin hosting beer dinners as well.
I had to ask why a large, attractive woodpile graced the dining room...I thought this was a nice touch. All Ironwood's meats are grilled over a wood fires.

Both yelp.com and foursquare.com report that Ironwood tavern has now closed. At that location now is Leesburg Public House...an even better beer bar!

Popkin Tavern closed sometime in 2014. Last tweet read, " Anyone interested in purchasing the pool tables please DM us contact information. Thanks! "

Popkin Tavern
123 W. Broad Street
Richmond,VA
804-343-1909

Popkin Tavern is a beer bar and gastropub in the Richmond sector that I was informed was called Monroe Ward.
The venue, located along Furniture Row, was home to the Popkin Furniture Store until 2004.
The place is huge having a small lounge area in a front window, a long bar, a large dining area, booths, a community table, and a large room with two pool tables in the back.
There are also 2 sections upstairs.
The taps number 24, and are a nice selection of Virginia and other U.S. microbrews and some Belgians.
The bottle list numbers about 60 choices.
Our barkeep was personable, attentive, and glad to answer our questions about the Richmond beer scene.

Keith Street Pub & Grille
101 Keith Street
Clemson, SC 29631
(864) 654-2274
This bar, in the small town of Clemson, is a beer drinker's paradise. Brightly lit and fairly large, it's a pleasant place to drink. An eclectic variety of world-wide beers is offered on their twelve taps. Drinking all of those and their 90 different bottles gets your name engraved on their Beer Club. The manager and bar staff are knowledgeable and care about their beers.
As of March 2009, Keith Street Pub & Grille has closed down. Rumours that an incident occurred the night of the Steve Miller concert between a staff member (read: bartender) and a roadie from the Steve Miller crew precipitatated the shut down are apparently just that - rumour...

Barley's and Hop's closed in September, 2013.

Barley's & Hop's
5217 Library Road
Bethel Park, PA 15102
South Park Shops
(412) 854-4253

Barley's and Hop's beer cafe is located in a strip mall in the Bethal Park suburb of Pittsburgh. A small storefront, it has one wall lined with coolers; the other has beers on shelves. One can get a cold beer from the cooler, and drink it there, or a warm beer from the shelves to go. In the back is a bar area with 13 beers on tap. Bring a growler. The few small tables seat perhaps 20, with about 8 at the bar and several small tables outside. They have a very limited menu of basic pub grub. At a Friday Happy Hour, one server was drawing beer, busing tables, taking orders, and delivering food, all quite efficiently, with enough time to give out beer advice and ring up six-packs. This is truly a Questor's type of place !!

By 2012, Korova was closed. The place is now called
Silky Jones.

Korova
214 E. State St.
Ithaca, NY 14850
(607) 277-7215

Even though the sign now simply reads "BAR" patrons still know this watering hole as Korova.
Located on downtown Ithaca's Commons, Korova features 17 well-selected taps, and the 40 or so bottles round out an excellent beer selection.
Our barmaid was eager to talk beer with us, and the crowd seemed to know their brews.
Original art decorated the walls, and we were informed that the displays change.

Blob's Park

8024 Blob's Park Road
Jessup, MD  20794
MD Rt. 175 @ Baltimore-Washington Parkway
410 799-0155

Blob's Park is a cavernous dining, dancing, and beer hall located between Baltimore and Washington. It was started by Max Blob in the 1930's as a place for his German beer-drinking buddies to congregate. Blob's is not really a "bar" in that it is only open Thursday-Sunday and charges a cover since there is music. But they do have about 80 kinds of beers with about 5 German drafts.
Wunderbar! After being closed for a couple of years, Blob's has reopened. The new convoluted bar seats 30 or more and they now have rock & roll and rockabilly shows, as well as traditional German music. The beer is still superb, and the food is about as reasonably-priced as you will find.

Auf Wiedersehen!Blob's Park closed for good in March, 2014.

Owner Max Eggerl thanks everyone for 81+ wonderful years!

Timothy's is permanently closed!

Timothy's Tap House & Raw Bar
19598 Coastal Highway
Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971
302.227.3435

Timothy's, which is located on Rehoboth's main highway, probably has the largest draft selection at the beach. Although many of the taps were the usual macros, craft breweries like Stone, Dogfish Head, Evolution, 16-Mile, Rogue, and Troeg's were also featured, with about 40 bottled beers as well. The place is one big room, with a U-shaped bar that seats about 25. There were many booths and tables, and the place had a spacious feel to it. A raw bar with 6 types of oysters was all the menu I needed to see.

Little Prague Bohemian Restaurant
330 G. St., Davis, CA 95616

Czech please! The best selection of Czech beers in all of Davis is found in this Slavic treasure on G street. Good drafts in third, half and full liters for sale with a selection of some harder- to-come-by bottled beers from the Czech Republic. Good soups and desserts made by a goddess, for Questors with plummeting blood sugar, and decent food round out the menu

Little Prague is no longer in business!

The Stable
1821 Cherokee
St. Louis, MO
314-771-8500

The Stable is a very spacious restaurant  in a converted stable; part of the Lemp Mansion in the historic district near downtown St. Louis.  As I understand it, it was part of the old Lemp Brewery, and is located near the Anheuser-Busch works. They have 24 guest beers on tap, and none of their own...yet. The guest beers are all "big" beers and are on an aggresive rotation.  The bottle beer list has about 50 of the worlds best beers.  For lunch they serve a very limited pub grub menu.  The 1/4 barrel brewing system is behind glass next to the bar.  Though the house brews were not ready for public consumption yet, being a representative of the Quest for the Holy Grain, the brewer brought me a helles, and later a kölsch.  He said they soon would be brewing a bock and a dunkel.

DON'T KNOW IF THEY EVER STARTED BREWING OR NOT, BUT THE STABLE CLOSED IN 2012!

Punk's Backyard Grill
2002 Annapolis Mall
Annapolis, MD 21401
(410) 571-7744

PUNK'S CLOSED THEIR DOORS FOR GOOD IN JANUARY, 2013!

Punk's Backyard Grill is located in the enoumous Annapolis Mall complex just north of Annapolis proper.
The L-shaped bar only seats about 10 patrons, as Punk's is predominantly a restaurant...very casual with live trees and large windows suggesting the backyard patio theme.
But let me tell you about the beer.
Punk's has 11 taps, with nary a one wasted on macros. The tap list was a well-chosen assortment of American microbrews, most with hefty ABV's. The bottle list exceeded 60, once again carefully chosen and multi-national.
The dinner crowd included families, but every one at the bar was there for the beer, and a few of the tables seated groups of people serious about their brew choices.
Many beers were served in the appropriate glass, and it's a good sign to see copies of the Brewing News close by.
The barkeep was friendly and personable, and the beers were $2 cheaper due to Happy Hour.
Beers are poured in either an 8-oz. or pint serving.
Punk's does not have the largest draft selection in Annapolis, nor would it make the short list of the town's best bars. But for a person serious about their beers, it is a great find.

Beneluxx Tasting Room
33 S 3rd St
Philadelphia, PA 19106
(267) 318-7269
CLOSED

Beneluxx Tasting Room is an extension of Eulogy Belgian Tavern, which lies only about two blocks east. Beneluxx boasts the most Trappist ales on tap anywhere in the world. Their total taps number about 35, with about 50 brands in bottles. The innovative twist is that the drafts can be purchased by the glass, or by a sample of several ounces, arriving either in a small snifter or Ehrlenmeyer flask. Beneluxx also excels in pairing cheeses and beers. Never has a Two-Hearted IPA tasted so good as it did with a farmhouse cheddar. The staff was more than attentive, and glad to make suggestions or offer explanations. In a town full of Belgians, this has to be one of the best venues in which to taste them.

BENELUXX TASTING ROOM CLOSED SOMETIME IN 2012!

KClingers Tavern
304 Poplar Street
Hanover, PA 17331
(717) 633-9197

You probably won't just happen to be in Hanover, PA. You have to go out of your way to get there. The best reason to do this would be to visit KClinger's Tavern.
NOT ANY MORE...CLINGERS CLOSED IN 2012!
With 41 taps that nearly all rotate, and over 600 bottles, KClinger's is one of the premier beer bars in the region. They
serve well-cared for micros and imports, with nary a macro or light. The atmosphere is warm, the beer is cold, and the crowd is friendly...and they know their beer. That's why they are there.

Muggsy's Mug House
1236 Light Street in Federal Hill
410-528-9111

For those of us still mourning the closing of Sean Bolan's, Muggsy's Mug House has arrived on the beer scene. Occupying the same location in Federal Hill as did Bolan's, Muggsy's offers 18 taps and about 40 bottles for your enjoyment. Danny, the proprietor, promises the arrival of Belgians, firkins, and other sudsy selections, that will attract appreciators of great beer. A large chalkboard lists the ...

Sorry - Muggsy's is closed as of the summer of 2011

Swift Half Pub
1001 N. 2nd St.
Philadelphia, PA 19123
215-923-4600

Swift Half is located in the new 80,000 sq. ft. courtyard known as the Piazza in Northern Liberties. During our visit, the Piazza was packed with screaming kids, dancers, vendors, and loud, mind-numbing club music. Since the doors to the bar were thrown wide open, this ambiance insinuated itself into the restaurant. The bar seats about 20, with booths and tables. There were 10 taps, and about 20 bottles. The beer selection was well-chosen and well-delivered. Our visit would have been a lot more pleasant without the courtyard chaos...whoa! Don't get too excited about this one. Swift Half is closed as of the summer of 2011.

Clark's Ale House
(315) 479-9859
122 W Jefferson St
Syracuse, NY 13202

Clark's has about 21 beers on a nice rotation; when a keg is done, something different replaces it. Clark's is popular also for their half-gallon milk containers that they fill with beer to go...popular for parades and other outdoor events. They have no TV, jukebox, or electronic games, there is nothing to do except drink beer with your friends. A cask or two will be on tap, and there's always that roast beef sandwich. Clark's has been called a "beer bar set in a lunch counter." It has also been declared that bars like Clark's make Syracuse a great, if underrated, beer town.
Egads! This is a bitter pill to swallow. Clark's closed its doors on 9/25/10 with no plans to reopen, due to an expansion project of the theater which houses the bar. This is not only a loss for Syracuse, but a jolt to the beer drinking establishment, as Clark's was a pioneer beer bar, repeatedly listed in lists of best places to have a beer.
You can read more about it here...

The Parkside
4709 Harford Rd.
Baltimore, MD 21214
Closed

Located conveniently near the intersection of Harford Rd. and Cold Spring Lane/Moravia Rd., Parkside is the newest establishment along Harford Rd. that features an impressive beer selection. The place is spacious, with a long L-shaped bar and perhaps 20 tables in a large dining area. Owner
Christopher Cashell has 6 beers on tap, and a comprehensive bottle list offering about 36 more. Needless to say...

As of midsummer, 2010, the Parkside is closed.

The Tiedhouse
2001 Hamilton Street
Philadelphia, PA 19130
215-561-1002

The Tiedhouse is situated on the ground floor of the Cityview Condominium in Philly's Art Museum area. This beer bar is tied to the General Lafayette Brew Pub in Lafayette Hill and features 13 of the General's outstanding beers on tap. Six guest taps and about a dozen bottles round out the brew menu. There is something for every beer palate, from a light lager to a number of high-octane beers....uh oh...
Hold the phone! Nine months after opening, The Tiedhouse closed for good. Sources from Philly Beer Scene chalk it up to "casuality of location."

Cantina del Cabo
139 G Street,
Davis, CA
(530) 756-2226

The Cantina has over 50 beers on tap and all but the most advanced Questors are guaranteed to find a few new beers here. Go for the beer, leave for the ambiance. Featuring plastic chairs and picnic tables, its decor is strictly Spring Break and it is very popular with the UC Davis crowd.
Whoa! Not any more its not! Our sources report Cantina del Cabo has been torn down for an AT&T store.

Kelly Cole's Improper
253 E. Water Street
Syracuse, NY 13202

Kelly Coles is a beer bar in Syracuse with 60 taps emphasizing local beers. Once a disco, it looks more like a diner, with linoleum tile and lots of windows. There are about 20 stools at the bar and about 25 tables. The patio has seating for about 50. The day I was there the barmaid said that she and the cook were the only ones there. Even so, the service was attentive.
Kelly Cole's Improper closed in February, 2008 for failure to pay $80,000 in state taxes. It is a loss for beer lovers and for Syracuse.

Dr. Dremo's Taphouse
2001 Clarendon Blvd.
Arlington VA 22201

Housed in the facility that used to be Bardo Rodeo, Dr. Dremo's occupies that niche between beer bar and brew pub. Dremo boasts about 40 draft beers and some half-dozen bottles. They also feature seasonal brews, such as their Chocolate Donut Beer. This is a particular favorite of one of our unnamed Charter Questors, who is taking the idea and running with it. We just don't know where. You may view this Donut Stout below, if you dare.Dremo's house beers are brewed by Shenandoah Brewing Co. of Alexandria, VA. Dr. Dremo's has been described as an "abandoned warehouse" with "minimalist ambiance." The establishment is also known for their music, pool tables, and happy hours.

Sad News - Dremo's closed its doors on January 27, 2008. Property is being developed. Dremo's is hoping to open at a new location.

Ludwig's Garten
1315 Sansom Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107
(215) 985-1525

In a town that boasts of it's Belgians and rapidly moves it's microbrews, Ludwig's is an oasis of outstanding German draft beer. The bier menu features about 20 taps and maybe 40 bottles, including such noted names as Jever, Engel, Spaten, Schneider, Franziskaner, and many others of German and Austrian origin...there were

even a few Belgians. Styles included Bock, Schwarzbier, Kolsch, Lager, Weisse, Hefeweizen and Pils.
Ludwig's Garten, the kitschy Center City German, has closed, as the building at 1315 Sansom Street has been sold. The new occupant will be Time, from the owners of nearby Vintage.

Jackie Blue
1313 N 2nd St
Harrisburg, PA 17102
(717) 230-9888

Looks forlorn, eh? It is. We visited Jackie Blue after reading that is was a great beer bar. It was. Now it is in the process of being sold. Only one draft - a few bottles - no customers. It should reopen, but not as a beer bar. Oh well, always call first.

Sean Bolan's Irish Pub1236 Light Street
Federal Hill
Baltimore, MD 21230
(410) 837-4440
Baltimore Location Closed!

Sean Bolan's is most definitely one of Baltimore's top 3 beer bars. With about 12 taps and well over 50 bottles, the selection is well-cared for and well-chosen. Ken is the beer man, and will be glad to chat about the various brews. Nearly half of the taps rotate and a firkin is tapped on Thursdays. Ask about getting on their email list. The chalkboard lists the beers with ABV's, the food is excellent, and the peanuts are free.

Yikes - this came as a shock. In October, 2005, Sean Bolan's closed its doors. They still have the place in Bel Air, but the Federal Hill site is gone! It was a great one.
