The Quest for the Holy Grain
The Boneyard

Alas, nothing lasts forever. Bye and bye, and for various reasons, some of our favorite establishments are forced to close their doors. This then is a page both nostalgic and melancholy, devoted to our Best Brew Pubs, Beer Bars, and Beer Retailers that are no longer with us.

Brew Pubs - Foreign Lands

Brewbaker
Arminiusstr 2-4 10551
Berlin, Germany
0177 694 09 61

Brewbaker Brewpub used to be located under a railroad viaduct. It has now moved several miles away and is located in an indoor market. Along with the brewpub are stalls, kiosks, and stands, selling various merchandise. The bar and brewery take up one stand, the seating area another. There is no kitchen. If one is hungry, one can step over to the fruit stand or perhaps the sausage stand. They have two of their beers on draft, and several more in bottles. The owner hopes that with yuppies moving into the neighborhood the location will be good.

Ach! Du meine Gute!
Google reports that Brewbaker is permanently closed.
There may be a new brewery under construction.

Browarmia Królewska
Warsaw, Królewska 1 Str.
phone +48 22 826 54 55
kom. +48 606 475

Browarmia is a brewpub just off the main street leading to Warsaw's Oldtown. It is worth seeking out, serving distinctive beers and food. Browarmia consists of a very large dining area with the bar in the rear and the brewing equipment beyond. There is more brewing equipment downstairs as well as brewing paraphernalia on display throughout. They have several of their own tasty beers on tap.

Whoa! Our friends from Yelp tell us that Browarmia is permanently closed!

Brasserie Kohler-Rehm
13 Rue Grandes Arcades  67000 Strasbourg, France
03 88 32 15 93

Brasserie Kohler-Rehm is a brewpub on the busy main square of Strasbourg.
Very large, there is ample seating outside, on the ground floor, and upstairs, too. Through the front door and front dining area and up about five stairs brings one to the American- style bar with several stools.
If weather permits one can sit outside in the square. Those who recommend the food here advised me to try their marvelous casiolette nouilles escargot. But I skipped these and ordered snails instead...and of course, a beer.
Although a brewing operation is not evident, the beer is drawn directly from the pressurized tank to your glass. Kohler-Rehm has their own Blond, Red and Lager on tap; they are considered Alsatian in style. The seasonal was gone.
As I said, they were busy; unfortunately too busy to chat about beer.

Sacre Bleu! Tripadvisor reports that Brasserie Kohler-Rehm has closed its doors!

Weiss Bräu
Am Weidenbach 24
50676 Köln, Germany
0221 58049549

Weiss Bräu is a neighborhood brewpub in a residential area of Cologne.
The brewing operation is in the front window and dominates a corner of the building.
Across the room is a typical bar...a service bar, as there is no room to hang out there .
That is OK, as there are many tables and stools. The adjacent dining area has several large tables. There is also a larger back room as well as an upstairs area and one in the basement.
Weiss Bräu serves a Kölsch. as well as their signature Hefe Weizen, which has a very nice, creamy mouthfeel. The menu is modest but leans toward meat.
The special, for E119.00 is ribs for four with 10 litres of beer.

We have found out that
Weiss Bräu
is permanently closed!

StoneBerlin
Im Marienpark 23
12107 Berlin, Germany

The American Brewer Stone of Escondido, California, is setting up a very large facility in Berlin.
Stone researched nine different countries and 130 sites in all, before arriving at this historical former gasworks building dating back to 1901.
It's over a mile from the end of one of the subway lines, so about a 20 minute walk (although there are buses zigging around).
It is in the back of an old industrial complex that is being reworked. One particular building had been a vehicle repair facility; the bar in the office section, and the brewery and large dining area share the old work space. The outside venue is very large and spread out like a theme park in that there are several different areas separated by golf course-like bunkers or childrens playgrounds.

They are not yet really open so have a very limited menu.

In 2019, Stone transferred ownership of their massive complex in Berlin to Brew Dog. Their own epitaph reads, Too Big, Too Bold, Too Soon. You can read about it here:

BARFÜßER
Hallplatz 2
90402 Nürnberg

Barfusser is a brewpub on the edge of the busy shopping district in Nürnberg.  It's a huge place. In the basement, they seat several hundred, and offer two of their own brews as well as the complete line of Tucher products.  The brew kettles are on display in the center of the restaurant and more of the brewery is visible in the basement.  It's a popular restaurant; people come for the food but enjoy the beer.

According to Yelp and Tripadvisor, BARFÜßER is now permanently closed.

Calwer Eck

Calwer Straße 31, 70173 Stuttgart
Telefon: 0711/222 49 44 - 0
info@calwereck.de

Calwer Eck is a large restaurant upstairs in the busy shopping district.
The bar is beyond the food buffet. The typical brewing equipment is in a glassed-off room next to the bar. Piled inside are small wooden cases containing six half-litres of their beer to go.
In addition to their other typical beers, they make a saison. It is subtle but tasty.

Our friends at Yelp tell us that Brauerei Calwer-Eck is permanently closed.
Du meine Gute.

1040 Wien.

Tel.: 01 - 5860300

Wieden-brau is a modern-looking brew pub just off a busy street.
Newly done in an old building, the place is large and friendly, with dark wood paneling and copper light fixtures that look similar to brew kettles.
The seven-barrel computerized system is in the room next to the bar.
Wieden-Brau has three full time beers on tap and one seasonal.

We have it from reliable sources that Wieden-Brau is closed for good.

Brew Wharf Yard
Stony Street
SE1 9AD
London
020 7378 6601

The Brew Wharf is a brew pub away from London's tourist area but close to the London Bridge railroad station. It is large and spacious. The main dining room is blocked off during lunch as there is penty of space in the bar and the outside patio. The brewing system is behind glass off of the main dining area. They make four of their own brews and have several guest taps and handpulls. The foods on the menu were quite pricey.

As of 2017, the Brew Wharf is reported as permanently closed.

Brauhaus Bohnsdorf
Andreas Balster
Buntzelstraße 89
12526 Berlin
Tel.: 030 /676 79 13

Brauhaus Bohnsdorf is a brew pub located well off the beaten path in a surprisingly rural area of Berlin.
It seemed as if we were intruding on the conversation between the regulars and the help as the service was quite poor.
The beer was ok, though.

As of the summer of 2017, Brauhaus Bahnsdorf is reported closed.

Mash
19-21 Great Portland St
London, England
W1W 8QB
020 7637 5555

Mash is a very unique brewpub located in one of London's busier shopping districts. The decor is ultra-modern, and the three-barrel, automated brewing system is on display behind the DJ booth...not any more it's not; Mash is closed and is now a swawnky restaurant called Vapiano!

Bunker Bier Hall
41 Earlham Street
Covent Garden, London
WC2H 9LD

Bunker Bier Hall is a brewpub in a trendy London shopping district. Located in the basement of a store block, the facility is quite large. The stand up bar is about 40 feet long. The dining area and kitchen probably extend another 50 feet...too bad the life of the brewpub didn't extend any longer; the space is now Kitchen Italia.

Simple Simon's
1-9 Church Lane St. Radigunds
Canterbury, CT1 2AG, UK
+44 1227 762355

Simple Simon's brewpub in Canterbury is just off the tourist path. Although they have recently started making their own brew, they have been selling beer for 600 years. Some of the original patrons were still lingering at the bar, but seemed a bit slow in responding to my questions...ALAS, SIMPLE SIMON'S IS NO LONGER WITH US. THE SPOT IS NOW CALLED THE PARROT PUB, AND DOES NOT BREW BEER.

Les Brasseurs de la Grand Place
rue de la Colline 24
1000 Brussels
telephone: 02-512.28.00
www.les-brasseurs.eu

Les Brasseurs is a brewpub with a great location on the Grand Place . "The Brewers of the Market" offer beers brewed in-house including a blonde, an amber, a tripel and a dark, and they are all on tap with four guest pours and 26 or so bottled beers. Beer cocktails are also available. The building has served, at various times, as a grocery, a hardware store, and a concert hall. They feature live music each evening.
Our late lunch/early dinner was passable and the house beers were OK, but with Delirium Cafe and A la Mort Subite only paces away, what the heck are you doing here?

Les Brasseurs de la Grand Place closed sometime after October, 2012!

Brigitta-Brau
Dresdner Strasse 38 - 40,
Brigitta Passage,
1200 Wien.

Tel: 01 - 334 4141

Ach! Brigitta-Brau closed its doors sometime after 2010.

Brigitta-Brau is a neighborhood brewpub in a neighborhood that has seen better days. The place is bright, with three sides all glass and has brew pub decor. The three barrel system is in a room adjacent to the bar. They have one beer year round and five seasonals, noted by their appropriate months, on the menu. They tend to ignore the bar patrons as they serve those dining.

Kloster Andechs -
Das Wirtshaus

Königstraße 55
90402 Nürnberg, Germany
0911 2369844

Andechs Wirtshaus is a large restaurant on the edge of the busy shopping district in Nürnberg

On a Friday afternoon Andechs was quite busy.  In spite of the big crowd, only one person was eating; everyone else was there for the beer!!

Plzenský dvor
Cintorínska 26
Bratislava, Slovakia

Tel.: 02/ 5292 6591

Plzensky Dvor is a beer bar on a side street near the busy shopping area. It is a long, narrow beer hall in the German tradition. The only English words they know are "Pilsner Urquell." Wait a minute! Is that English? Nevertheless, there are several other draft beers on their menu.

Sadly, Plzenský dvor closed for good sometime after October, 2009.
