The Quest for the Holy Grain
The Boneyard

Alas, nothing lasts forever. Bye and bye, and for various reasons, some of our favorite establishments are forced to close their doors. This then is a page both nostalgic and melancholy, devoted to our Best Brew Pubs, Beer Bars, and Beer Retailers that are no longer with us.

Brew Pubs - United States

Battlefield Brewing Company
4187 Plank Rd
Fredericksburg, VA , 22407
phone: (540) 785-2164

The Battlefield Brewery Pub is a brewpub about a mile from I-95 near Fredericksburg, VA.
This small bar in a strip mall gives no indication that there is a brewery inside. One gets nostalgic for the past on entering, mainly because everyone there is smoking.
The regular-sized bar sits 12 with a half dozen booths opposite.
Beyond, there is hallway going back to the kitchen, with restrooms on one side and the brewing operation on the other. There are 20 taps. Except for their own beer, they serve B M/C exclusively.
The food is good, and quite inexpensive, as are their beers, which are actually quite good.

RateBeer.com reports to us that Battlefield Brewing out no longer in business.

Squatters Airport Pub
Salt Lake City Internat'l Airport
Terminal Two - Concourse C

We are listing Squatters Airport Pub as a brew pub although the beer is brewed at their downtown location.
Squatters has a brewpub located at Salt Lake City International Airport, so I was able to enjoy one last Utah beer before heading home, the Lupulin Drift IPA.
What is lupulin?
The easy answer is the component of hops that adds bitterness to beer.
I rated the Off Duty slightly higher than the Lupulin Drift, 4.0 and 3.75, respectively, so perhaps the Lupulin was too bitter.
Some breweries try too hard for the hop bombs and forget the citrus or piney taste that some of us dig so much.
The location features an extensive food menu, and full bar service is available from 8am to midnight.

According to YELP, Squatters Pub at the airport is now closed.

The Blue Canoe
113 S. Franklin St.
Titusville, PA 16354
814-827-7181

The Blue Canoe Brewpub in Titusville, PA is housed in a refurbished store front. The old store windows give the otherwise darkly paneled bar plenty of light. The ten-barrel kettle is in a separate, glass-enclosed room, and the rest of the seven-barrel system is in the basement. The dining area is small with about ten tables...the medium-sized bar has seating for about 20, plus several tables of it's own. The food was quite good and not over-priced. On the bar is an embedded, frozen metal stip, a "cool tray" to keep the glasses of beer cold. There are seven beers on tap.  They are tasty and true to style.

Uh oh...Blue Canoe closed in June, 2019. Lavery Brewing was supposed to move into the space. Don't know if that panned out.

Bhramari Brewing Company
101 S Lexington Ave.
Asheville, NC 28801
(828) 214-7981

We entered Bhramari minus one umbrella, but remained undaunted.

Bhramari Brewing Company, named for the Hindu goddess of bees, is located on Asheville's fabled South Slope, just behind Wicked Weed.
Bhramari's flagship beers include The Good Fight Sour Pale Ale, Lorelai American IPA, Molly's Lips Black Gose, and Painted Fortune Carolina Common.
We found the illustrations on the beer cans to be inspiring...draw your own conclusions.
Aside from the flagships, Bhramari also offers small batch beers, and barrel-aged brews such as Agua Mala, or "bad water", a dry-hopped IPA aged for six months in oak tequila barrels.
The food at Bhramari is gastropub quality, and they profess to feature chef-inspired beers, and beer-inspired food!
Their menu has been called inventive and their taproom lively.

Bhramari Brewing Company closed for good in 2023.
A new brewery is supposed to move into the space.

Gordon Biersch Brewery
1906 Towne Center Blvd
Annapolis, MD 21401
(410) 266-5965

The new Gordon Biersch-Annapolis sits in a brand new spacious retail mall off of Riva Road just South of Route 50. The restaurant is clean and spacious as befits a successful brew pub chain. The bar seats about 15 with numerous tables, booths and rails...the dining area is large. Gordon Biersch makes German-style lagers; you will find nothing new or complex here, but all are clean, drinkable, and true-to-style. The brew works are visible from the bar. Garage-door type windows open behind the bar to service outdoor patrons in warm weather. Biersch offers six taps consisting of 5 standards and 1 seasonal. Gordon Biersch is about 10 minutes from Main Street Annapolis, and well worth a visit in this historic town...a beer destination in its own right.

Gordon Biersch Annapolis closed it's doors for good in February, 2023.

There are other Gordon Biersch locations.

Black Bottle Brewery
1611 South College Ave
Suite 1609
Fort Collins Co 80525
Phone: 970-493-2337

Black Bottle Brewery is a small brewpub just outside of downtown Ft. Collins.
Diminutive in size, they have an adequate bar and perhaps 15 tables. Black Bottle offers 40 taps, with about 12-15 being their house beers.
The rest are guest taps.
Black Bottle also sports an extensive bottle and can list.
There is a small, glass enclosed room on the right side of the restaurant. There are steps inside leading down to the brewing operation. One can stand at the top and watch them make beer.

Black Bottle closed at the end of November, 2023.
They will reportedly sell the space to another brewery.

Home Republic
328 Laskin Rd
Virginia Beach, VA 23451
Phone: (757) 226-9593

Home Republic is a brewpub just off the beach in the tourist area of Virginia Beach.
Owner and brewer "Joe" Curtis is a 20-year marine veteran whose mission " is to make every customer feel at home by sharing our passion for good beer, wine, and food."
The venue is located in one storefront-sized room.
The kitchen is on one side of the rear, the brewing on the other. There is a small bar up front, and perhaps a dozen tables.
Home Republic's food is unique, for example jalapeno cornbread with bacon jam, and quite tasty. They have 2 or 3 of their own beers on tap, and a very nice guest list of both taps and bottles.

Home Republic also specializes in "beertails" such as the Pineapple Grenade and the Michelada.
Happy Hour is Monday-Friday from 3-7 PM.

Yelp and Google report that Home Republic is permanently closed.

Stoudt's Brewing Company

Route 272
Adamstown, PA 19501 (717)-484-4386

For a great German Oktoberfest, Stoudt's can't be beaten. Whether for a beer fest or a visit anytime, your hosts Carol and Ed Stoudt provide the best in German beer and cuisine. Stoudt's has about 9 taps of their hand-crafted beers. Though they specialize in German lagers, the styles are diverse with the likes of a stout and a double IPA. There is really too much happening at Stoudt's to cover in this space...just visit their website.

Stoudt's closed in 2020. The Stoudt's complex was sold. You can still get Stoudt's Beer in bars...it is brewed by Evil Genius.

The Brewery at
Gamble Mill

160 Dunlap St
Bellefonte, PA 16823
(814) 355-7764

Hard by the railroad tracks, Gamble Mill is a brewpub in Bellefonte, PA.
The building that you see today has appeared that way since 1892, although the history of a mill at this site, on Spring Creek, goes back decades befor that.
The structure was saved from condemnation and restored between 1975 and 1985.
The downstairs lounge is closed for modernization, but the restaurant upstairs is fully functional. Although the main room is not particularly large there are also several more rooms and alcoves.
All of the chairs match, but the tables are an eclectic mismatch of sizes and styles.
They have 7 of their own beers on tap, including a seasonal and a Belgian-style. One tap is also reserved for a guest beer.
The food was good and not expensive.

It looks as if Gamble Mill no longer brews beer. They are, however, A restaurant, inn, and bar.

Miscreation Brewing Company
6 Center Sq
Hanover , PA 17331
717-698-3666

Miscreation is a brewpub in the rural town of Hanover, in southern Pennsylvania.
The pub sports two levels, with ample seating at tables and chairs downstairs, and a bar with about a dozen seats and more tables upstairs.
Miscreation creates 15 different beers with 7 or 8 on tap at any one time.
The styles include pale ale, stout, wit, imperial IPA, pumpkin porter, and others.
After a few beers, a Questor can order food from a tasty pub menu.
Beers are brewed on site using their 1 bbl. system.
Miscreation also offers a Miscreation 101 class explaining the art and science of their brewing. Tuition includes session with an expert, flight of 8 beers, and free pint/keep the glass.

Sadly, Miscreation closed its doors for good in 2021, as reported by several of our sources.

Tipping Point Tavern
190 North Main Street
Waynesville, NC 28786
(828) 246-9230

Tipping Point is a brew pub in the Asheville suburb of Waynesville.
Tipping Point has at least four of their own beers on tap, including an amber, IPA, blonde, and porter.
They always have Pabst Blue Ribbon on draught, and the remaining 5 taps pour a rotating selection of craft beers.

Tipping Point surprised both employees and customers when they closed for good on July 29, 2017, according to The Mountaineer.

Empire Brewing Company
120 Walton St
Syracuse , NY 13202
(315) 475-2337

The Empire brewpub has reopened in the tavern district of Syracuse.
The facility is in the basement of an old brick building with bare brick motif.
Although there is a large bar in the center, about half of the space, in several rooms, is for food service.
Empire aspires to provide customers with the finest all-natural ingredients available by utilizing fresh locally sourced products from over sixty Central New York farmers.
A number of Empire's beers are award-winning.
In addition to eight of there own beers on tap, they have several guest beers from the local area.

Empire Brewing closed in 2019. They have a new location at which they brew for distribution.

Boston Beer Works
61 Brookline Avenue
Boston, Massachusetts, USA 02215
(617) 536-BEER

Thank You Boston, Salem, Lowell, Hingham, Framingham.

Sad to say but we've brewed and served our last beers.
We've decided to pack it in due to the pandemic and all that.
We will miss you and the many years of fun we had
bringing you fresh local beer and food.
BEERWORKS was proud to serve you.
Sincerely Joe Slesar and the BEERWORKS Team

Backshore Brewing Company
Boardwalk between 9th & 10th
Ocean City, MD
(443) 373-1224

On a chilly fall evening, the boardwalk was desolate.
We had heard that Backshore Brewing was on the boardwalk at 9th Street...we had also read that it was on Atlantic Avenue.
We couldn't find it.
But then I smelled a familiar odor...somebody was cooking beer.
We followed our noses.
Outside a man was cooking a batch of beer...turned out he was the brewer working on an "experimental batch."
We entered Backshore. It is small...only about 6 seats a the bar.
The place was full...mostly regulars and us. They were all there for the beer.
Backshore had 6 of their homebrews on tap. The Kolsch that I tried was very good.
Though the barroom was small, Shorebilly is attached to Hammerheads. If one desires food or liquor, they can walk through a door to Hammerheads and bring it back.

We have it on authority that Backshore closed at the end of 2020.
But wait! Brewer Nathan Todd has opened a new brewery on 24th St...
The Other One Brewing!

River City Brewing Company
853 Museum Circle
Jacksonville, FL 32207
904-398-2299

You driving to Florida? You gotta stop at River City BC and have some beers. At $2 a pint from 4 to 7 PM a twenty dollar bill can get you into some serious trouble. Here you will find some of the most flavorful beers this side of Portland, Oregon. That we did not care for any of the styles the first time through the beer list, reflects poorly on us. After the first $10 was gone those beers got better and better. Jackson Pale Ale, Amber Bock (A seasonal), Riptide Porter, Red Rooster, and Jackson Light rounded out the microbrews, while the locals drank from the Bud suite of swill. Go figure.

Egads! Not only has local landmark River City closed, it has been demolished!

Thirsty Bear Brewing Company
661 Howard Street
San Francisco, CA 94105
Telephone: (415) 974-0905

When in San Francisco, don't leave without checking out the Thirsty Bear. The atmosphere is great -- the brick walls, natural wood, the exposed metal pipes and fermentation tanks gives it a homey, classic brew pub vibe. The bar is long and there are many tables at which to sit, eat, drink, and talk. A lot of people could pack in without it feeling overcrowded.

The Thirsty Bear specializes in Spanish cuisine. And they also specialize in beer. The food is good and the beer is great. They had about 10 beers on tap.
Overall, this is one of the finest brew pubs I've visited. They are doing it right. If you find yourself in San Francisco, definitely stop by the Thirsty Bear.

I can hardly Bear to tell you this:
Yelp reports that San Francisco's Thirsty Bear is permanently closed!

St. Francis Brewery
3825 South Kinnickinnic Ave.
St Francis, WI 53235-4225
(414) 744-4448

St. Francis Brewery is a brew pub in a new stand-alone building far from anything else in the south Milwaukee suburbs.
The very long bar area takes perhaps a third of the space, the dining area the rest.
The brewing operation is at the rear of the bar.
St. Francis has 8 of their own beers, mostly German style, that are true to style and very tasty.
The menu is mostly pub grub, well done and not expensive.

In late 2019, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal reported that the "St. Francis Brewery appears to be closed for good."

Hops Grill and Brewery
3625 Jefferson Davis Hwy.
Alexandria, VA
703-837-9107

Located in a suburban shopping center, HOPS offers four standard brews and two seasonals. A few macro bottles are available. The Bold Gold was good and clean as a whistle. At lunchtime, the bar was mostly manned by businessmen eating and drinking their lunch. The bar is rectangular and spacious, and the bar staff helpful. Kristi, the brewster, showed me the seven-barrel system and explained that she is required to brew the four standards, but has more choice in brewing the seasonals. The Fun Zen Bock was tasty with body. HOPS also has a location in Richmond, but I would not hesitate to return to this one.

Early in 2020, Hops Grill and Brewery in Alexandria closed for good.

Gordon Biersch
7861 L Chain Bridge Rd
McLean, VA 22102
phone: 703-388-5454

Gordon Biersch is a successful chain of brewpubs across the U.S. We visited the McLean, VA location and found their lagers to be crisp, tasty, and true to style. There were 8 beers on tap, and the selection was comprehensive, including marzen, hefeweizen, and Czech lager. The place had a corporate feel to it, and was populated by an upscale crowd. Nevertheless, Matt, the bartender, made us feel at home and was willing and eager to answer a vast range of questions. There is also a location in nearby Washington, DC, as well as in Annapolis, MD.

Gordon Biersch in Tyson's Corner has closed for good.
Gordon Biersch has other locations in the area.

Mad Fox Brewing Company
444 West Broad Street Suite I
Falls Church, VA 22046
(703) 942-6840

Mad Fox is located in the charming yet bustling center of downtown Falls Church. When you enter you are greeted by the hostess, and 6 large stainless steel serving tanks...so you know they are serious about the beer here. The long bar seats 30, and a variety of stools, tables, and booths provide for a total of 300 thirsty patrons. Mad Fox features 18 taps and 6 hand pumps, but at any given time they most likely offer 6-10 draft beers and 1-3 cask beers. They offer exclusively their own brews, crafted by owner/brewer Bill Madden, formerly of Vintage 50 and Capital City. Mad Fox also fills growlers.
The food menu was imaginative as well as provocative, and features many local Virginia products. Our sandwiches were delicious.
As expected, the beer I had was excellent, and I wish I could have stayed for more.

Sorry to say, Mad Fox closed its doors for good in 2019.
Ownership attributed the demise to too much competition in the area.

Dog Money Brewpub
50 Catoctin Circle NE
Leesburg, VA  20176
703.687.3852

Dog Money Brewpub is the lastest brewing operation to make its home in this lovely setting at 50 Catoctin Circle, just minutes from historic downtown Leesburg.
If you had visited either Thoroughbreds or Vintage 50, than you can picture the layout of Dog Money.
The bar seats about a dozen, with seating for about 20 more in the barroom at tables.
Dog Money has another dining room in the back, with another bar...a more secluded location.
The building is attractive and well landscaped...the staff was friendly and informative.
Dog Money had 6 of its beers on tap at the time of our visit, including Loudon Common, hefeweizen, red ale, IPA, porter, and a Belgian-style tripel.

Although Leesburg, as of the summer of 2016, has numerous microbreweries, Dog Money is the only true brewpub.

And then there were none!
Dog Money closed its doors in late 2020, a victim of the pandemic.
They were the fourth brewpub in this location!

The Valley Inn & Abbey Wright Brewing Company
204 Valley Street
Duboistown, PA 17702
(570) 326-3383

Abbey Wright Brewing Company is located in the Valley Inn just across the river from Williamsport, PA.
Abbey Wright had six of their own beers on tap at the time of our visit, and we were surprised to see an assortment of 14 macro taps, too.
They also stock maybe 45 bottles.
The whole place is done in knotty pine, with many places to sit, rest, lean, eat, and drink. Pool and Foosball are available to while away the hours while drinking your Abbey Wright, though most of the patrons at this time seemed to be partaking of the macros.
A stage for live music was at one end of the room, and thankfully, we counted only one television.

Abbey Wright Brewing is closed as of Summer, 2021.
The Valley Inn is still in business.

Bridgeport Brew Pub & Bakery
1318 Northwest Marshall Street
Portland, OR 97209-2806
503 241-7179

Nestled snugly in an old warehouse district in the shadow of a bridge is the sprawling ivy-encrusted Bridgeport Brewery. A huge iron staircase divides the pub into left and right, upstairs and down. There is outside seating along the old loading dock, our place to escape the unnecessarily dark interior. The nice thing about the place is each of the quarters seemed to have its own identity, so you could find your peeps somewhere in this warehouse beer hall.

There were eight beers available on our visit, but you had some pour options. Three were in casks and one on nitrogen. The cask beers were unrefrigerated and served at cellar temperatures providing a more authentic 19th century beer drinking experience, save for the towering pricey condos that filled the skyline.

The beers were all solid, each swallows like the last one. Clear and consistent, with flavors that did not fade. All-in-all not a bad experience. But neither do you say this has to be one of my Portland stops. Very good beers, but they compete in a tough town. Beer Advocate gives them a B+ and I won't argue with that, but they barely made it to B+.

The Stumptown Tart was a raspberry Tripel available only in bottles that was quite good. I sampled all the beers to aid my choices and the sampler there is a nice deal. Blue Herron Pale Ale was a pleasant surprise. Hop Czar is their pride and joy and it was nice enough but not a stand-up and salute beer. It's 85 IBUs were not terribly acidic making it very quaffable. The carbonated porter outrated the nitrogen for me. But the cask ESB and cask IPA may have been their two nicest beers.

The bridgeport Brewpub is now permanently closed!

Lexington Avenue Brewery
39 North Lexington Avenue
Asheville, NC 28801
(828) 252-0212

The Lexington Avenue Brewery (LAB) is a large, modern brewpub in the center of Asheville.
It's kind of a cool place in that there are lots of nifty places to sit. The bar seems to go on forever, stretching 92 feet, and eventually one can be sitting among the tanks.
The front windowsill acts like an additional bar with people seated right at the window as the pedestrians wander by.
LAB serves four of their own beers.
They are proud of their state-of-the-art music venue.
The food at Lexington Avenue is good and not expensive.

Lexington Avenue Brewery was slated to close at the end of 2018, and reopen as CANarchy Collaboratory, a "new taproom concept."

Kelly's Brewpub
3222 Central Ave. SE
Albuquerque, NM 87106
(505) 262-BREW (2739)

Kelly's Brewpub is in a building that used to be an auto dealership.
The one time showroom is now the main dining area. This large area seats well over 100 in German beerhall style. The patio seats nearly as many.

We have it on good authority that Kelly's Brewpub has closed.

Trailhead Brewing Company
921 S. Riverside Dr.
St. Charles, MO 63302
(636) 946-2739

The Trailhead Brewing Company is a large stand alone building on the Missouri River in St. Charles, Mo.  The very large bar, seating about 30, along with tables and booths, is upstairs.  Dining is on three floors, and the brewing equipment is on display throughout.  They have five full-time beers and a seasonal.  They sell high end pub grub.  The bar staff was quite busy and had no time to chat.

They will have more time now!

In 2020, after 25 years, Trailhead closed and will become a Schlafly brewpub.

Growlers
227 East Diamond Ave
Gaithersburg, MD 20877

(301) 519-9400

Growlers is a brewpub located in the quaint section of Gaithersburg that is still reminiscent of a sleepy, small town.
It occupies the same site as the old Summit Station Brewpub. They offer 8 taps, six of which are their house beers...the other two are guest taps.
They also carry about 15 bottles.
Some of their beers include Diamond APA, Mama Red Irish Red, Earth Rocker IPA, and others.
The lunch hour presented an eclectic crowd of diners and beer drinkers.

Our information has it that Growlers is now closed for good.

Ellicott Mills Brewing Company

8308 Main Street
Ellicott City, MD 21043
410.313.8141

The square stone ediface stolidly situated on main street in Old Ellicott City was once a hardware store; don't take Alpenhof beers for granite!
Ellicott Mills Brewing Company
makes good beers and lots of them. They are prolific in the styles of beer they make, crafting both ales and lagers, but their specialty beers are their bocks. Bock of the Bat, Big Red, Firecracker, Doppelbock...there is one on tap no matter the season.
Walk down to the Batskeller where bartender Tim Kendzierski runs one of the best bars in the region.

In early 2020, Ellicott Mills was bought by Phoenix Emporium, a long-time Ellicott City watering hole.
The venue is now known as Phoenix Upper Main. All of the old Alpenhof beers are gone, but Phoenix is beginning to brew their own.
Alas, Timmy is no longer with them.

Ocean City Brewing Company
5509 Coastal Highway
Ocean City, MD 21842
phone: (443) 677-3075

Ocean City Brewing Company is a brewpub that opened in this resort town in 2014.
According to their mission statement,
" there is nothing better than drinking a good craft beer, enjoying good food, and being surrounded by good people. That's why we wanted to bring this experience to Ocean City. "
The venue is large and can seat about 300 patrons.
The merchandise shop is about as large and varied as any you will find in a brew pub.
As for the beers, there were about 15 OCBC brews on tap, and one being poured from a hand-engine.
As of the summer of 2017, OCBC had at least 4 other locations in Maryland.

They don't have any locations anymore.
Due to myriad financial and legal issues, Ocean City brewing is closed for good.

Granite City Food & Brewery
150 W. 96th St.
Carmel, Indiana 46290
317.218.7185

Granite City has several locations in the Indianapolis area, and I understand it can be found in multiple cities across the mid-West.
Having tried a number of their beers during several visits, I have yet to be disappointed with the flavor and drinkability.

Granite City in Carmel, Indiana is permanently closed.
The place in Fort Wayne is still open, however.

Bury Me Brewing
4224 S Cleveland Ave
Fort Myers, FL 33901
Phone: (239) 236-2337

Bury Me Brewing is a cozy brewpub on the busy main street of Ft. Myers.
One storefront wide, it is located on the edge of a busy strip mall, so there is plenty of parking but not necessarily near by.
Upon entering, one encounters the bar with about 8 seats and opposite that about 5 booths. There is a moderate amount of standing-around room.
The brewing operation is in the rear, separated from the bar by a rope....

This just in!
Bury Me Brewing closed its doors for good on September 28, 2019

Ironworks Brewery & Pub
12354 W Alameda Pkwy
Lakewood, CO 80228
(303) 985-5818

The Ironworks Brewery & Pub is a sportsbar in an otherwise abandoned strip mall in the far western suburbs of Denver.
Ironworks appears to be a typical sports bar with several pool tables, lots of TVs, and plenty of room. That's where the similarities end.
Rather than proffering only a selection of Macro lites, Ironworks has 9 of their own beers on tap as well as 3 guest beers - ironically, Bud, Bud Light, and Coors Lighter.

Blah, blah, blah.
In 2019, the City of Lakewood siezed the Ironwood Brewery and Pub for failing to pay taxes.

It is closed.

JoBoys Brew Pub
27- 31 E Main St
Lititz , PA 17543
(717) 568-8330

JoBoy's opened in 2014, and is situated on Main Street in quaint and attractive downtown Lititz.
You have to pay attention whilst walking down Main Street, as JoBoy's has understated signage.
JoBoy's states that they are "one of, if not the smallest nano-brewery in Pennsylvania. "
The whole venue feels private and cozy, yet is not small.
The staple-shaped bar seats 14, with numerous booths and tables.
Dark wood and exposed brick prevail in the decor.
JoBoy's had 15 taps and 2 casks of their beer available at the time of my visit.
Many styles were represented, from an American lager to barley wine, IPA's, stout, wheats and more.
I had an Oktoberfest on tap, and took two other beers home in growlers...all were tasty and well-crafted.
My bartender was helpful and friendly, and I am sorry I did not ask her name.

JoBoy's closed for good in 2019 due to problems with their lease.

Horny Goat Brewing Company
2011 South First St
Milwaukee
(414) 383-6906

Horny Goat Brewing Company is a brew pub on the river outside of Milwaukee.
Most of the service is on a large, sheltered patio.
In a nearby building is what appears to be brewing equipment, but the waitress said that all of their beer was produced in Steven's Point.
All of the six Horny Goat beers are on tap, and the pub grub is reasonably priced...

but the bar is no longer open.
Our sources informed us that the Horny Goat property has been sold to a new development group affiliated with one of Wisconsin's largest construction companies.

They may still make Horny Goat beer in Steven's Point.

Tug Boat Brewing Company
711 SW Ankeny St
Portland, OR 97205-3703
(503) 226-2508

Just around the corner from Mary's Club and its All Nude Revue, Tug Boat Brewery is a colorful and eccentric little place to stop for a beer. Visitors are greeted with a Norm-like round of “yeahs” when they enter and everyone is booed when they leave, unless the bar is closing and you're being ushered out. The décor is crazy uncle who lived in the family homestead alone for the last 40 years without changing or cleaning a thing. This grimy family-run place is a fun stop. The filmy walls are lined with bookshelves filled with volumes that some people loved and others no one has bothered to open. What else in the city that drinks and reads? Homey painted wooden booths line one wall the bar lines the opposite wall. A small stage (one foot raised) takes up most of the third wall across from the entrance.

Unfortunately, Tugboat closed its doors for good at the end of August, 2017.
Here is what Tug Boat had to say in way of explanation:

“The decayed condition and the dangerous incidents originating from the address above us, increasing in frequency and severity, forces our Portland institution to its final month of operation, August 2017. Based on the damages routinely imposed on us, no insurance agency can provide us coverage.”

Fat Head's Brewery
131 NW 13th Ave
Portland, OR 97209
(503) 820-7721

Located in Portland 's Pearl district, arguably one of the best brewing areas in the world, Fat Head's is a great stop for any Questor seeking to add a wide variety of delicious house beers to their list.
Fat Head's is sure to have over a dozen house drafts, and a bunch of guest beers as well. Fat Head's originated in Pittsburgh, and still has its original Saloon there.
They also have two locations in Ohio.

In December, 2017, Fat Head's in Portland closed its doors and ties were severed between Fat Head's Inc. and franchise holders in Portland. Von Ebert Brewing will occupy the space.

Chama River Brewing Co
4939 Pan American Freeway
Albuquerque, New Mexico
505.342.1800

"One of the its oldest and most well-known bastions of craft beer, Chama River Brewing," went out of business with seemingly no warning, in the Summer of 2017.

Redhook Brewery &
Cataqua Public House

1 Redhook Way
Portsmouth, New Hampshire 03801
(603) 430-8600

The first stop on the breweries/brewpubs of Southern NH tour was the Redhook Brewery in Portsmouth, NH.
The dining/drinking area reminded me a lot of the Harpoon facility in Windsor, VT, where Jennifer and I stopped last summer. I sampled the ESB or “Extra Special Bitter.” This was my first taste of Redhook.
I have to say that the ESB left something to be desired. The pour had very little carbonation and was just lacking an “oomph” factor.

Uh oh.

As of Summer, 2018, Redhook in Portsmouth, NH has closed.
The location will be re-branded as Cisco Brewing.
Redhook still has a presence in Seattle.

Lost River Brewing Company
155 W Main St,
Wardensville, WV 26757
(304) 874-4455

I do not know what town holds the record for most breweries per capita but Wardensville, WV with 273 people and Lost River Brewery has to rank right up there. At that rate Portland, OR ought to have 2209 breweries, so maybe we have Beervana East?

You ain't gonna find this place by mistake. Or maybe that is the only way you'll find it. Any way you find it you are in luck because this one-time dry goods, hardware, furniture store, cum brewery is one dynamite little place for a beer and a meal. It is only open when tourons, a cross between a tourist and a moron, are on the road...that means weekends. The red-roofed white building is festooned with a Lost River flag and a sidewalk blackboard declaring they are open for business. On the left is the tavern/restaurant; on the right is the brewery. On a sunny afternoon the muted darkness of the tavern challenges the eyes to adjust but adjust they do. On the left is a lacquered hardwood bar that seats 15 or so to the right are high tables for groups. The walls are boards, red behind the bar, beige everywhere else. The floor looks like original hardwood, the ceilings are mostly wood with exposed ductwork. Drapery curtains separate spaces where doors might otherwise. It works. I sat at the bar, to my left were spacious storefront windows. The homes across the street were spittin' distance. Traffic was rare. Bluegrass music plays gently in the background. Before you leave you're gonna wish you played the fiddle. A blackboard announces four Lost River Beers. Today they have Cranberry Wit, Black Ale (5% and 24 IBUs), Pale Ale (5.5% and 47 IBUs), West Virginia Common (4.5% and 18.9 IBUs). I sample all four and dread the wit. It is sickly pale with a pinkish hue. Sonofagun if they don't nail it! It is tart and refreshing, a nice summer beer that manages the right balance between cranberry (which I hate) and wheat (which I like). WV Common is the hoppiest 19 IBUs I've had in a while, it'sa session beer. Now here is the Questor's bonus. The menu ain't shabby. Lamb chop starters! What is this New Zealand?Tuna, calamari, shrimp, oysters? What up? Can't they see we are landlocked in mountain country? The sandwich menu is attractive if limited but the entrees make up for it and today a lunch special is an oyster po'boy. "Prove it!" I say, give me one and beer battered onion rings too. I wish this was in my neighborhood because this landlocked microbrewery served the best oyster po'boy this side of Nawhlins. The sesame onion roll was so fresh women got up and moved. The oysters may not have slept anywhere yesterday but they were not frozen and the fixins were fresher than the oysters. The onion rings were killer, as in too many of them are going to kill you.

Sadly, Lost River closed its doors for good in January, 2018.

You can read more about it here.

Ornery Beer Company
14389 Potomac Mills Road
Woodbridge, VA  22192
703-490-6400

Ornery Beer Company is a brewpub located in a strip mall across from the outlets at Potomac Mills.
The venue is quite large, taking up at least 4 storefronts.
The first two bays are one big open room with a very long bar down the center.

Change all this to the past tense.
Ornery closed on March 12, 2018. The rent proved just too steep.
The owner is trying to locate to a smaller space.

Sehkraft Beer Garden and Haus
925 N Garfield St.
Suite A
Arlington Virginia 22201
(703) 841-5888

Sehkraft is a brew pub and restaurant located in the Clarendon section of Arlington.
It is owned by the same proprietors who brought us Westover Market and Beer Garden, also in Arlington and
also reviewed on this site.
Sehkraft (meaning "vision" in German) is long and crescent-shaped, with the bar and brewing operation on the left, and the restaurant and music venue on the right.
The bar seats about 15 patrons, with a number of tables in the bar, and many more in the adjoining restaurant area.
The bar proffers 35 taps, the plan being to offer 30 guest beers and 5 home brews.
There are also a number of craft bottles and cans to choose from.
The guest taps offered a wide variety of craft beers, many from Virginia.
The 10-bbl. system is visible behind the bar, and beer can be taken home from a growler fill station.
Our bartender was helpful and regaled us with facts about Sehkraft's operation.

Sehkraft closed in January, 2017, with the help of the Arlington County Sheriff.
The establishment will become The Board Room, a successful bar from DC.
There are no concrete plans to brew.

Southend Brewery & Smokehouse
161 East Bay Street
Charleston SC 29401
(843) 853-4677

The people in the South are so nice, except when a blue person is unhappy in a red state. Then they can be quite mean, mocking and small. It is actually ironic entertainment to hear an open minded liberal excoriate his fellow statesmen and I heard a lot of that in South Carolina. I also heard that Southend was a nice brewpub. So if the theme is irony or hypocrisy let me say this, until this review the Mai Tai in Honolulu was the only really pure negative review this intrepid questor has written. Well, move over Mai Tai, there is a place with more variety and worse beer. Southend ought to be renamed Deadend as it is the weakest brew pub I have ever visited. Southend is situated in a beautiful building (the local cab company could not find) in a picturesque downtown location. Our party of six was seated at a booth where we were served by a comely blonde lass who was full of energy and empty of everything else.Let's cut to the chase. They have beers with engaging names : Love Me Two Times Blonde, Watch It Grow Wheat, Castle Pinckney Pale Ale, Rip Tide Red, Pict's Stout , and a seasonal I gratefully have forgotten. If you were blindfolded and tasted each beer it would have been impossible to tell them apart. More honest names would be Bland, Blander, and Blandest.
If you like beer you have been to a similar place somewhere, where every beer is a slight variation of the other beer. Do yourself a favor get a six pack of Amstel Light and stay in your hotel room. But that was not all that was endearing. You have to climb two flights of stairs to get to the men's room. Points off for that. The food, at a smokehouse, was mediocre. I got barbecue meat and it almost made me think the beer was tasty. But here is my favorite part of the journey. A friend asked for separate checks at the end of the evening. Five of us were fine with divide by six, but go figure. So serve-me-one-time Blondie stands in front of the register for 20 minutes or more-no exaggeration. She is frantically inputting numbers as we are all finished and disappointed and ready to go. She comes back to the table and says I couldn't do it and places a pile of those American Express folders on the tables. She says there was two different totals. We all reach into the pile and grab a folder and every bill was different from $18 to $33. It was like a perverse grab bag. Everyone seemed resigned to the fate of paying some random amount until one of the party placed his folder back on the table and picked up the seventh one (for a party of six). Blondie had divided everything by six and come up with seven bills.
We called the manager who took about 20 minutes to put the bill back together into one bill. On this night SC was neither red nor blue; it was the seventh ring of hell. If you get to Charleston do not be seduced avoid the Southend at all costs.

As of 2017, this venue was a brewpub called Lagunitas Taproom & Beer Sanctuary.
However, in Summer, 1017, it was closed for structural repairs.

Cleveland ChopHouse
824 W Saint Clair Ave
Cleveland, OH 44113
(216) 623-0909

Cleveland Chophouse is a brewpub in the warehouse district of downtown Cleveland. One enters into the spacious restaurant in an old brick building with dark paneling and lots of large windows, and can stay in the restaurant or go left to a very separate bar area.
The bar has perhaps a half dozen tables with lots of space in between, and an adequately-sized bar with part of the brewing operation visible through windows where the bar mirror would usually be.
ChopHouse has twelve of their own beers on tap...

...or at least they did.
Cleveland Chophouse was sold in 2013 and became Cleveland Chop.
Clever.
They do not brew beer.

Seven Barrel Brewery
Plainfield Road
Colonial Plaza, Rt 12-a
West Lebanon, NH 03784
603-298-5566

The Seven Barrel Brewery is across the street and visible from the southbound exit of I-89 in West Lebanon, NH.  It's kinda dingy on the outside and rustic on the inside.  It's not very large, with a very small bar.  They have eight of their own beers, and a cask, but nothing else.  The beers seem true to style, but a little thin. Service was good, food was cheap.

Seven Barrel's last day of operation was December 7, 2016.
It is now the Salt Hill Pub and appears to no longer be a brewery.

Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery
1101 Harney St.
Omaha, NE 68101
402-614-9333

Young Questors are going to live longer, and that has its obvious advantages. But older Questors are sometimes played like a harp by a young lithesome virtuoso performer and it is a thing of beauty to behold. Deserea was her name and she took better care of me than my mom did when I was growing up. Back rubs, unrequested free samples, and she sat down to explain the pros and cons of the menu choices. She smiled nicely and knew how to lean over the table, making beer drinking so much more fun.
We were at the Omaha Rock Bottom on 11 th Street...the quaint warehouse district that is Omaha's destination street. Rock Bottom is a national chain, and featured 7 Rock Bottom beers none of which were losers, all of which were brewed in Denver. The Terminal Stout was roasted coffee and flavorful, the Hop Bomb was da bomb and their Fire Chief Red was a pleasing beer. And the food was good. But stop the presses, here is the neatest thing about this place - they used the available warehouse building to create a reasonably pleasant flat screen dotted rectangular bar in the middle (of course) classic rock in the background place to drink. Near the front windows were large booths (6-8 people) arranged around a big wooden table. In the center of the table were two taps, each with a different house brew. The lucky patrons in these booths never had to wait for a beer wench; they only had to jerk a beer whenever they wanted one. Why didn't someone thing of this sooner?
Each booth has two pre-selected taps. You can change them to any two beers you want but that is going to cost you. Fifteen dollars to change (and flush) one tap, $25 to change them both. The virtual beer glass keeps count of the ounces you have poured and you're billed accordingly at the end of the night.
There were a half dozen guest taps and a couple more dozen “bottle conditioned” beers. Bud Light was the only macro I saw. A Questor new to the chain can score some beers. The guest taps include some local beers and the bottles were interesting.
If you get to Omaha, go to Rock Bottom. Try to sit in a tapped window booth and ask for Deserea. You're going to enjoy the evening. Guaranteed.

Deserea is working somewhere else now.
As of Summer, 2017, Rock Bottom-Omaha is closed.

The Sturgis Haus
43 E Main St
Lititz , PA 17543

717 627-7827

The Sturgis Haus is a brewpub in downtown Lititz.
Proprietor and brewer Jim Ament was glad to explain how his family is currently transitioning this espresso bar-smokehouse- brewpub from the feel of a coffee house to the ambience of a pub.
The building is historic, and was built in the 1860's as a hotel.
Sturgis Haus is open every day except Sunday from 7 AM for breakfast.
It closes at 5 PM Monday-Wednesday and is open 'till 9 PM Thursday through Saturday.
Jim offers 6 Sturgis beers on tap, and most rotate.
The staff was extremely helpful and friendly.
We'll pay Sturgis Haus another visit on our next trip to Lititz.

ACH! AS OF EARLY 2016, THE STURGIS HAUS IS CLOSED.
TOO BAD...IT WAS A NICE LITTLE PLACE.

House of Brewz
Taps and Tapas

10045 Gulf Center Dr. E110
Fort Myers, FL 33913
@ Gulf Coast Town Center
Tel: (239) 332-6800

House of Brewz is a large, would-be brewpub in a very large modern shopping mall near Ft. Myers.
To avoid confusion, allow me to point out that House of Brewz has two locations.
One is a small bar in Fort Myers Beach.
This one is much larger and located in a high-end mall.
With 150 beers on tap and a spacious dining area as well as an outdoor patio, one would think this a popular spot. Maybe not.
This Questor visited twice and was disappointed to be one of the few customers each time. Service was spotty, and the pub grub a bit pricey. Most disappointing was that although they advertise as being a brewpub, they will not have the proper permits to brew before February 2014.

If all goes well, House of Brewz will then be home to the Bury Me Brewing Company.
House of Brewz later added Bury Me Brewing Company...then Bury Me moved to their own location...as of January, 2016, House of Brewz was boarded up.

De Lazy Lizard
305 N 1st St
Ocean City, MD 21842
(410) 289-1122

De Lazy Lizard Brew Pub is an offshoot of De Lazy Lizard Bar & Grill which is just a block away on the bay.
The Brew Pub occupies the building which for 80 years was known as Melvin's Steak House, on the corner of 1st St. and Philadelphia.
The U-shaped bar seats about 25 customers, and an additional room brings the total capacity of the establishment up to 150.
De Lazy Lizard Brew Pub had six of their own brews on tap, as well as about 10 guest taps.
I had a Blonde Ale and the IPA, both of which were darn good. Their beers are sold by the pint or in flights.
The bottle list numbered about 35.
The young lady who was our bartender was friendly and eager to answer our questions, even though she was new to the job. If she didn't know the answer, she found out.
De Lazy Lizard Brew Pub is a welcome addition to lower Ocean City.

Note! In February, 2015, the building in which de Lazy Lizard is housed suffered a fire. As of October, 2015, the building was no longer in existance. The property was a parking lot for De Lazy Lizard Bar & Grille.

Uncle Tucker's 68 Exit 46 •
Cumberland, MD 21502
301-777-7005

Well, here's something we don't usually do at Quest for the Holy Grain...review a brewpub after it has closed down. We were there on the last day, Nov. 1, to say farewell to this cozy pub in an historic building. This is the at least the third Maryland brewpub to cease brewing in 2005, and Uncle Tucker's 1810 Brewhouse will be missed.

Ryleigh's Brew Pub & Raw Bar
32-36 E. Cross St.
Federal Hill
410-539-2093
No Longer Brewing Beer

This building has gone through several incarnations since it was Sisson's...Baltimore's first brew pub. People seem very pleased with the way it is now. Still brewing their own beer, Ryleigh's makes 5 standard brews, but will only have about 3 at any one time. There is also always a seasonal on tap. In addition, there are 5 other "guest" taps, and about a dozen bottles, but these could stand to be a little more diverse. Stick with Ryleigh's beers.

Achtung! Ryleigh's closed their brewing operation in the summer of 2005. It is now an oyster bar where macros are very popular. A shame...Ryleigh's, then known as Sisson's, was Baltimore's first brewpub.

DeGroen's Grill
&
Baltimore Brewing Company
104 Albemarle St.
Baltimore

DeGroen's Grille , also known also as The Baltimore Brewing Company has been called the "cornerstone of local craft brewing." BBC brews some of the best German-style lagers around. Brews include Pils, Weizen, Dunkel, Marzen, and always a seasonal, including their famous Doppelbock.

Requiem for a Brewpub

DeGroen's Grill, or the BBC, closed it's doors for good on Friday, Feb. 25, 2005. Although there are a lot of great bars in Baltimore; most are long and narrow, having formerly been rowhouses. Beloved as they are, many are of similar architectural style. The BBC was a true beer hall. People were attracted to the BBC for more than the beer, although that would have been reason enough. There was a sense of community and camaradie among the customers. The Mug Club drew both locals and those from the suburbs looking for good conversation and German style lagers. You were certain to meet freindly and interesting people from all walks of life.I first learned about Oktoberfest at the BBC... and recall festive annual celebrations with Hans und Heidi. Hans would stand on a table playing his bass, leading toasts, and doing the Chicken Dance. The BBC also played host to brewfests of Maryland beers.

The last few years saw management changes and an inconsistency in beer quality, but the regulars remained loyal. The Mug Club may even outlive this tragedy and gather at another venue. I've heard things. But there will never be anyplace quite like the BBC,and Baltmore beer lovers are in mourning.

Summit Station
227 East Diamond Avenue
Gaithersburg, MD
Summit Station was sold in 2006, closed down, and was re-opened as Growlers. The brewer is the same and the beers are still good

Summit Station is an old brick building located in a nice, quaint part of Gaithersburg. A great place to put a brewpub. There were about 8 styles on tap at the time of my visit. Their beers have won medals, which is no surprise, as those that I tried were very good. The India Pale Ale started out good, but as it warmed up, became superb. They also carry about 5 macro bottles for those who...well, I don't know who would want a macro with all these fine beers on tap. The barmaid was friendly, knew her stuff, and didn't mind serving samples. The crowd at about 2 in the afternoon seemed to be a bunch of beer cronies with whom I enjoyed talking. Most belonged to the mug club, knew their beer, and were there to get a head start on Happy Hour which starts at 4 PM. I will return to Summit Station when I am anywhere nearby

Four Sons Brewery
[Closed - January 2007]
113 South Franklin Street
Titusville, PA 16354

We reviewed the Four Sons Brewery and Restaurant two years ago, and found it to be an intriguing brew pub with good beers and helpful staff. Unfortunately, the establishment closed in January, 2007.

Capitol City Brewing Company
Baltimore, MD
301 S. Light St Harborplace
(410) 539-PINT

Capitol City is in the heart of the tourist district and as a result has to put up with crowds of strangers that don't realize they are in a brew pub. The beer quality varies with the style. Fuel, their barley wine has won prizes, while their amber begins to taste like sugar water after a few. The IPA is true to style. The food portions are large and the service is pretty quick.

As of September, 2007, Capitol City in Baltimore has closed it's doors. Check the other locations.

Johnstown Brewing Company
942 Pinegrove Lane
Johnstown, PA 15905
814-536-3525

Johnstown BC is an interesting place. The upstairs is a dining room with a small bar, the downstairs is a bar with a small eating area. Both have outside seating. The upstairs bartender was very generous with samples. After we ordred our lunch, he disappeared. The server boy got us our next drinks, and the tab. The price and amount of pub grub were what we expected. However, my angus burger tasted like breakfast sausage, and my heap of fries were the worst fries I have ever had; hard on the inside, and soft and slimey outside. The brewing setup is in sight, and is "upside down", in that the lauter and kettle are downstairs, and the fermenters are upstairs. The young brewer has been there a month, coming from John Harvard in Philadelphia. There are 9 beers on tap, as well as Miller lite, and what we had was tasty.
Johnstown closed on June 23, 2008 after 5 years in business. Two rock slides on a local road severely hurt their business. We'll never get to find out just how bad those fries were.

Rocky Run Tap & Grill
6480 Dobbin Center Way
Columbia, MD 21045
Phone: 410-730-6581

All locations of Rocky Run are fun places that have good, quenching beers and a reasonable menu. Rocky Run specializes in Canadian ales, and usually have their 5 standards available. Don't look for odd, complex beers here...the brews are all good, if a little similar...yada, yada, yada...
Rocky Run in Columbia surprised many when it closed on August 11, 2008. However, the beer always seemed an afterthought here, especially in the later years.

Old Dominion Brewpub
44633 Guilford Drive
Ashburn, VA 20147
703-724-9100

You are not going to stumble upon Old Dominion Brewery by accident...you have to be looking for it. Which is a good idea. They offer 22 different taps, just about all of the beers made here at the brewery. They carry both the Old Dominion labels and contract brews. They also have some bottles. Just about all styles are represented. The bar seats about 20, with a spacious dining area of tables and booths....Wait a minute! Not any more it doesn't! On August 25, 2008, Old Dominion Brewpub closed its doors. According to ownership, as quoted in Mid-Atlantic Brewing News, "the business wasn't there." The Brewery will remain open and public events at the site will continue.

Kevin pulls a cold one

General Lafayette Inn and Brewery
646 Germantown Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA  19444
Telephone (610) 941-0600

The General Lafayette Inn is housed in a building whose construction was begun in 1732. The restaurant and brewpub itself is a warren of cozy, comfortable rooms that make even a first-time patron feel at home. At any given time they will offer 8-12 taps of their own beers, and two casks. They included a nice assortment of styles with several Belgians and a raspberry mead ale.
What a dern shame! General Lafayette closed it doors in 2011.

Mattingly Brewing Company
3000 South Jefferson
St. Louis, MO 63118
314-881-1500

The Mattingly Brewing Company is a very small neighborhood restaurant in an eclectic mature St. Louis neighborhood.  The total bar/restaurant seating is about 50.  They have 8 of their own beers on tap; the brewing operation is in the basement.  The pub grub was tasty and seemed to be popular with the locals. Unfortunately, Mattingly is closed!

Michigan Brewing Company
1093 Highview Drive
Webberville, Michigan 48892
Tel: (517) 521-3600

CLOSED - MBC CLOSED IN 2012 DUE TO FINANCIAL PROBLEMS!

Founded in 1995, Michigan Brewing Company housed its brewing operation and brewpub until recently in a log structure in rural Webberville. The brewpub had a friendly, cozy atmosphere that seemed to beckon on cold Michigan winter nights, where peanut shells were strewn on the floor and friends could quaff a wide assortment of hand-crafted brews. Owing to their commercial success as brewers, Michigan Brewing Co. outgrew this rather quaint structure, and recently moved to a huge new industrial park building nearby. On a recent visit, there were just a few regulars in the brewpub on a summer weekday afternoon, although that is not surprising, given the time of day and the rural setting. Owing to the time of day, none of the food was sampled, but the fare looked to be of the basic burgers-and-fries variety. Michigan Brewing Co. has two lines of beer – one that is marketed under its own name, and a full line of Belgian-style beers that goes to market under the Celis brand. Representative samples of each were tasted, and based on the last visit nearly 7 years previously, it is obvious that this brewer has gone from good to great. There were 16 brews on tap – 12 with the MBC label, and 4 Celis offerings. Also sharing the space with the brewing operation and brewpub is a large fully stocked homebrew supply retail store, (“thingsBEER”), as well as a Michigan State University Bio-Refining Training Center. The bio-fuel produced there provides the heat needed by MBC's brewing operation during the cooking stage. MBC's beer is currently distributed in about a dozen states, and plans are said to be underway for opening a second location in the University town of Lansing. As the company continues to expand based on its excellent beer, the sad fact is that the old log cabin pub might be preserved only in the memories of its patrons.

Buffalo Brewing Company
3100 Olive St
St Louis, MO 63103
(314) 534-2337

The Buffalo Brewing Company is a small restaurant in a strip of collegiate-style eateries.  Small, plain, and very, very well lit, Buffalo has the feel of a diner, because of the many windows.  The brewing operation is visible through a window behind the bar.  They have four year-round brews and two rotating seasonals.  The beers are very good, inexpensive, and true to style.

UH OH! BUFFALO BREWING CLOSED ITS DOORS IN 2013. IT IS MOVING TO GRANITE CITY, ILLINOIS, AND WILL BE CALLED THE SIX MILE BREWERY.

Southend Brewery
2100 South Boulevard
Charlotte, NC 28203
(704) 358-4677

CLOSED

Southend Brewery in Charlotte, seems to be quite successful. Located in a converted warehouse, there is lots of room, but most of it is dedicated to the restaurant. The brewing operation is visible in the back but not emphasized. They have six regular brews and one rotating seasonal. The beers are true to style, but seem more commercial than passionate. It is one of a chain with other locations in Raleigh and Charleston.

ROOTS CLOSED ABRUPTLY IN 2010 (read more)

Roots Organic Brewing Company
1520 SE 7TH,
Portland, Oregon
503-235-7668

Roots Organic Brewery is the first certified all-organic brewery in Oregon, which is akin to being the first certified atheist in the former Soviet Union. Who cares? Housed in an old warehouse district, Roots is a nightmarishly painted funky little brew pub in yellow, green, red, and blue in an indiscernible pattern. All the brewing works are right on premises as are a collection of grassy hippie beers any child of the sixties can be proud of. Tables and chairs line the perimeter of the bar; a dozen or more stools defined the bar. At the time of our visit five regular “handcrafted ales” were on tap along with one seasonal, a Gruit Kolsch. Roots is in one corner of the Beermuda triangle along with the Lucky Labrador and the Green Dragon. Acoustic women on guitar and spool tried their best to ruin the experience but failed. This is a must stop, not for spectacular beers but for a good idea whose time has already passed.

King Arthur's Steak House & Brewery
Corner of
West First & Bridge Streets Oswego, New York 13126
(315)343-1300
Whoa! King Arthur's Brewery seems to be gone.
So does the steak house.
Hotel is still there, though.

King Arthur's full service bar is attractive and fairly upscale, with 5 of their own beers on tap. The brewer, there since June, is at his first full- time brewing gig. He had been an assistant at other small breweries. All the brews on tap are his, all true to style and rather tasty. They included a Golden Ale, IPA, and an ESB among others.

Ouch! Triumph closed its doors in the spring of 2014. They still have venues in New Hope and Princeton, however.

Triumph Brewing Company
117-121 Chestnut Street
Philadelphia, PA 19106

phone: (215) 625-0855

The Triumph Brewing Company is an upscale restaurant that serves nouveau cuisine; small portions of unique dishes at high prices. Go there for the beer.
The brewing equipment is upstairs. The first floor ceiling has been recently reinforced with large steel i-beams.
Philadelphia is a beer-savvy town, and most of the patrons knew why they were there. The beer list is arranged from light to heavy, and is generally quite good. I saw some unusual styles, including a kellerbier, vienna, and a rauch weizen-doppelbock. And the restrooms are unique...visit even if you don't have to. This is Triumph's third location, the other two being in New Hope, PA and Princeton, NJ.

Big Daddy's Brewing Company
2229 Colonial Ave
Roanoke, VA 24015
(540) 777-0007

CLOSED

Big Daddy's is a brewpub in a strip mall on the outskirts of Roanoke.
The kitchen is shared with an American cuisine restaurant that has no bar.
The main entrance to Big Daddy's is in the back of the strip mall. The place itself could be described as a country night club.
There is a very large bar that probably seats 30 surrounding the brewing operation. The rest of the large space has two bandstands, and many tall bar-style tables, with plenty of space for mingling.
They have eight of their beers on tap as well as a full line of macro bottles.

Stonefly Brewery
735 E Center Street
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
414-264-3630

Stonefly is a neighborhood brewpub in an older area of central Milwaukee.
The whole establishment consists of one large room, with seating at a large bar or several tables.
There is also seating on a patio accessed from the inside, but the place appeared overgrown and used for storage.
The brewing operation is in a room in the rear.
They have 8 tasty beers on tap...

Whoa - not any more they don't.
Stonefly closed in the Fall of 2014.
The space is now occupied by
Co.mpany Brewing.

Watch City Brewing Company
256 Moody Street,
Waltham, Massachusetts
(781) 647-4000

The Watch City brewpub is just off the beaten path in Waltham, MA.  The brewing operation is in a glass walled room in the front window.  The bar is large and spacious with only room dividers separating the dining area.  Four full time beers are on tap as well as three seasonals and a cask.  The beer is good, but the food on the menu seemed pricey.
In late summer of 2014, Watch City closed for good. boston.com cited as reasons for the demise, a "financial situation that spiraled out of control, growing tensions between ownership and workers, and complicated dealings with a regional beer industry power."

Pyramid Alehouse Brewery, and Restaurant
1029 K Street
Sacramento, CA 9581
(916) 498-9800

If you were drugged and blindfolded and awoke in this brew pub, your first words would be, "Am I in California?"
Pyramid has nine handcrafted ales.
Spend the night with the triplets Amber, Hefe and Apricot Weizen, three of the finest unfiltered wheat beers on the planet. Hefe is the dog here. And the ABV's are respectable for wheats.

As of 2015, Pyramid no longer has an alehouse in Sacramento. They do have outlets in Seattle, Berkeley, Portland, and Walnut Creek.

Vintage 50
50 Catoctin Circle NE #100
Leesburg , VA 20176
(703) 777-2169

Vintage 50 occupies the space in Leesburg that used to be Thoroughbred's brewpub. The style is modern and somewhat chic, yet very comfortable and friendly.
V-50 offers 8 or 9 drafts, all brewed on premise...no bottles or macros...

Uh oh!
Sometime in the summer of 2014, Vintage 50 became The Beer Joint.
As of our visit in March, 2015, The Beer Joint has closed.
That makes the third closed brewpub at this location.
What's wrong?
