Ganter Brauereisusschank
Münsterplatz 18-20
79098 Freiburg,
Germany
Phone +49 761 34367

Freiburg's big production brewery, Ganter, has a restaurant in the square by the Cathedral.
It is called Ganter Brauereiausschank, and
is situated in an historic building known as Haus zum Roten Eber...The House of the Red Boars.

We have included this venue under Best Brewpubs even though it is a Brauereiausschank...a brewery outlet, and not really a brewpub.

Ganter brewery is located across the river to the southeast.

The motif is Bavarian with big wooden beams and dark paneling.
There are numerous alcoves with several tables in each, giving an uncrowded feeling.

Ganter has four of their own beers on tap, as well as several more in bottles.

The best thing for Questors: they open at 10:00 am every day.

Hausbrauerei Feierling
Gerberau 46
79098 Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany

Hausbrauerei Feierling is a new, quite modern brewpub on the edge of the busy shopping district of old town Freiburg.
The Feierlings have been brewing beer in Freiburg since 1877.
The large biergarten, open in pleasant weather, is the oldest in Freiburg's downtown, and can accomodate 700 guests.
On a Saturday mid-afternoon, the place was quit crowded.
With a small menu, and only a helles on tap, most people stopped only long enough to pound one down.
The nearly round room is centered on a large kettle which intrudes in the upper floor.
Feierling has another building, just across a small creek.
This bar serves also a dunkel.
The beers seemed well-made, if a tad on the sweet side.
Feierling's beers are organic, brewed exclusively from biologically certified ingredients.

Martin's Bräu
Kaiser-Joseph-Straße 237
79098 Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
+49 761 387000

Martin's Bräu is a brewpub in the busy tourist district of Old Town Freiburg.

One enters by going down steps to the building's lower level.
While getting one's bearings, he or she notices that the food preparation area is right there, and the bar across from it.
The brewery tanks are straight in back of that.
There is also a spacious terrace which can accomodate 200 guests during the summer months.

Where does one sit?
Each corner of the facility has 6 great tables, and there are a few other tables here and there.

Martin's Bräu serves a helles and a hefe- weizen, as well as two "craft" beers, in this case a blonde and an IPA.
Most people were there to eat, but every patron was enjoying some beer.

Alten Bahnhof
Bahnhofstraße 2
76316 Malsch, Germany
+49 7246 305944

Alten Bahnhof is a brewpub in what was once a small railroad station, in the town of Malsch, about 15 km south of Karlsruhe.
Small and cozy, the place was crowded on a Sunday morning with old men, either skipping church or making their way home.
The small brewing setup is behind the bar.
Alter Bahnhof makes the usual three beers...a Helles, Dunkel, and Weizen, as well as a seasonal, in this case a
Märzen.
A happy hour, known as "beer after work" ensues Monday thru Saturday at 6:00 PM.
A few men were eating, but all were drinking.
There were no women patrons at all, and I was the youngest one there.

Brauhäus zum Ritter
Schloßplatz 1, 68723
Schwetzingen, Germany
+49 6202 924950

The next town to the east of Heidelberg, Schwetzingen, is home of
Brauhäus zum Ritter.
It's located on the town square, just across from the castle.
The large bar area is centered on the brewing operation.
The bar stretches across the back of the room, with another bar-like table against the brewing kettles. There are two more of these bar-like tables and probably 60 barstools scattered about along with several keg tables.
Brauhäus zum Ritter
also provides lots of extra room for standing around.
A separate dining area is off to the left, and to the rightis situated a large room in dance hall motif.
The is a biergarten out back, patios in front, and seating out in the square.
The bus to Heidelberg stops at the front door.
They have the usual three German beers on tap as well as an unfiltered pils. The menu is Bavarian, and is quite extensive. At one o'clock Friday afternoon, this Questor was the only bar customer. Perhaps the waitress had duties in the back, because that is where she spent her time.
It was a lonely place to drink.

Woinemer Hausbrauerei
Friedrichstraße 23
69469 Weinheim, Germany
06201 12001

Woinemer Hausbrauerei is a brewpub several blocks from downtown Weinheim.  A large establishment, it is disconcerting to enter as the main entrance is thru a messy garage.  This entrance takes one into a hostess station in a hallway.  To the right is a large dining room, to the left the bar area.  There is no bar to speak of, and although the area probably seats 50, it seems quite cozy.  They serve three year- round beers and a seasonal.  The decor is brewpubish, sporting hops, steins, and brewery murals.  Several young men in rubber boots kept using the elevator, leading one to believe that there is an extensive brewing operation in the basement.

KULTURBRAUEREI HEIDELBERG Leyergasse 6
69117 Heidelberg
Tel: +49 (0)6221-502980

The Kulturbraurei in Heidelberg is a brewpub near the busy tourist and shopping area around the university.  The bar area...there is no bar to speak of...seats about 100 in typical German beerhall style, and there is a small stand-up area. One can find a cozier dining room if desired, as well as rooms upstairs and a biergarten.  Kulturbrauerei features a helles and a hefeweizen year round as well as a seasonal.  Perhaps this is a fine dining establishment, as the menu prices were particularly high.

Vetter´s Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus
Steingasse 9 - Im Schöneck
69117 Heidelberg
Tel: 06221/165850

The Vetter Brauhaus in Heidelberg resides in the busy shopping and tourist area near the university.  The brewpub has been there a long time; it is quite worn and has a lot of character.  The main room has about 6 large tables and about 6 more smaller ones, and large displays of hops hanging like chandeliers.  The 10-barrel brewing system stands out quite prominently.  A helles is served year round as well as a seasonal.  "The world's strongest beer" is their claim to fame, once featured in the Guinness Book.  Their "33" beer has an original gravity of 1.033, and tastes like a strong doppelbock.

HopfenSchlingel
Wirtshausbrauerei & Biergarten
Weiherstraße 13
75173 Pforzheim
Telefon 07231 24477

HopfenSchlingel is a brewpub in downtown Pforzheim.  Very small, the bar seats about 25 customers on barstools placed randomly around small bar-style tables.  The diminutive, computerized brewing operation is behind the bar.  They have a pils on tap as well as occasional seasonals.  The main dining area is upstairs.

Brauhaus 2.0
Egon-Eiermann-Allee 8 76187 Karlsruhe, Germany
+49 721 47050220

Brauhaus 2.0 takes one to the next level of beer drinking.
It's located in a new building, that could be a school, near a new housing development in suburban Karlsruhe.
2.0 see themselves as "an upgrade to the traditional brewpub."
The brewpub focuses on regional products and sustainability...a movement that is also popular in the U.S.
One wing of the building houses the owner's art collection, the other the brewery and bar area.
A large dining area is in the center.
Brauhaus 2.0 makes the usual three beers as well as a seasonal, in this case a Märzen.

Wirtshaus Wolfbräu
Werderstraße 51. 76137
Karlsruhe-Südstadt.
Tel.: 07 21 - 3 54 57 70

Wirthaus Wolfbrau is a corner bar in a residential neighborhood; an outlet for the Wolf brewery.  They have three full- time beers on tap as well as at least one seasonal.  They also have about 10 guest bottles.  There is no bar to speak of, although there are several long, narrow, bar-style tables with bar stools along each side, as well as perhaps a dozen dining tables.  At meal times the place fills up with neighborhood folk, families, and young and old alike, so that every seat is filled.  The food is attractive, inexpensive, and judging by the crowds, quite tasty.  Oh, and the beer is quite good, too.

Badisch Brauhaus
Stephanienstraße 38-40
76133 Karlsruhe, Germany
0721 144-4400

Badisch Brauhaus is a large brewpub in the basement of a hotel on the edge of the busy shopping district.  Immense, they describe themselves as an indoor bier garten and have about 30 good-sized tables.  The typical bar area is nearly as big.  There is a lower level, closed when I was there, almost as spacious, and a third level below that.  The brewing operation is glassed in at the back of the main bar.  They have two year-round beers on tap as well as a seasonal.  The beers seem true to style, good, but not wonderful.  The afternoon beer special each day is a full litre for E3.00.

Brauhaus Kühler Krug
Wilhelm-Baur-Straße 3a
76135 Karlsruhe
Tel: 0721 / 831 64 16

Brauhaus Kühler Krug is a very large facility in a park-like setting by a river.  It's been there a long time as the transit stop is named for it.
On the day of this visit, several sections were closed off.
It appears they have a dance hall as well as a bier garten.
What might be a bar was also closed.  The main dining area focuses on the brewing operation which is up a few steps in the center of the back of the room.
A chalkboard shows the month's brewing schedule; something nearly every day.  They have two full- time beers as well as a seasonal.
The manager, quite friendly, gave me that day's release, a märzen, in exchange for a Questor card.
All of the beers were quite good.

Der Vogelbrau Karlsruhe
Kapellenstraße 50
76131 Karlsruhe, Germany
0721 386364

Vogelbrau is a brew pub in a busy residential area just off the University campus.  The dining area is in a separate storefront.  They have one year-round pilsner.  A pamphlet at the bar lists 23 seasonals and their release dates.  The beers are quite tasty.  The modern computerized brewing operation is behind glass in the front room, which seats about ten and a long bar that opens to another small seating area.

There were two beers on the list, Pils and Doppelbock.  When I ordered a "doppel" the bartender looked as if he didn't understand, so I said "double".  Being busy, he was impatient and said, " Pils oder buck."  I said "kein pils."

Wichtel Hausbrauerei
70469 Stuttgart-Feuerbach
Stuttgarter Str. 21
phone - 0711 - 820 516 90

The address number listed for the Wichtel Brauerei is prominently on the front of a drug store.
Nothing on this side, nothing around back.
Aber warte mal !...I smell beer
cooking !!
Another building is attached to the 4th side.
That's it !!
Even standing by the door, it's well hidden.
Inside is better.
Wichtel Hausbrauerei is located in a redone factory with brewpub motif.
There are two floors of seating, and the brewing equipment is prominently displayed.
Wichtel has the three standard German beers and a seasonal on tap as well as in bottles.
Pub grub is available.

Dinkelacker-Schwabenbrau
Tübinger Str. 46
70178 Stuttgart, Germany
Phone: +49 711 64810

The Dinkelacker-Schwaben Brau brewery takes up a full city block in a busy neighborhood just out of downtown Stuttgart.

The pub associated with it looks impressive from the outside but a little less imposing on the inside..
An uncrowded row of tables by the windows, an aisle, then another row of tables.
Up several steps to the bar area. Mostly a service bar with several small tables.

Plenty of taps, but nothing new for this Questor.
The menu looked adequate.

Sophie's Brauhaus

Marienstr. 28
70178 Stuttgart, Germany
0711/610962

Sophie's Brauhaus is a large restaurant, upstairs in the busy shopping district. The typical brewing equipment is in the back, but turned around so that the rear of the tanks face the bar. They have three of their own on tap, and they seem quite tasty. Food portions were large and relatively inexpensive.
