Brauerei Spezial
Obere Königstraße 10 96052 Bamberg
0951 24304

Although it is not in the tourist area of Bamberg, the Brauerei Spezial appears set up like most of the others.
A massive door opens to a large hallway that leads to the biergarten. To the left is the bar area. No bar in the American sense, though, but more of a service area with a gravity keg dispensing rauchbier. This is a good place to have a quick beer, or one can proceed on to the biergarten in back.
One can also venture into the dining area where a waitress will take your order.
I have it on reliable sources that this is the Brauerei in which to meet local Bambergers...in the others you'll run into many tourists.
The rauch was the only brew available during my visit, but at other times a weizen or a kellerbier would not be out of the question.

Brauerei - Gasthof Höhn
Hauptstraße 11  96117 Memmelsdorf
0951 40614-0

Next door to Drei Konen is Brauerei - Gasthof Höhn.
The Brauerei - Gasthof has been run by the Höhn family for 7 generations; the 8th is currently in training.
The front door opens to the bar room itself. The hotel desk is an extension of the bar. Although the decor is similar to the other bars in the area, the timbers and panels here are blond and there are many windows, giving the room a cheeriness not found in most of the other area brew pubs..
The bier stube has quite a few tables, and also cushioned booths.
Their flagship beer is the Görchla, which could be descirbed as a keller pils. There were two other beers at the time of our visit.

Drei Kronen
Hauptstraße 19  96117
Memmelsdorf
0171 7415723

A short bus ride takes one to the Bamberg suburb of Memmelsdorf. There are two brewpubs next to each other downtown, and a third at the bus turnaround.
Drei Kronen is a formidable, mustard-colored fortress.
When opening the door to the Drei Kronen, one enters a short dark hallway. Straight ahead is the door to the hotel, to the right a small tabled area, and to the left is a formal full service bar area that seats about 50 at white tableclothed tables. Beyond the bar is a large formal beer area.
The offerings at any given time might consist of a hell, pils, smoke, and a weiss.
I, however, must have been there during a slow period...there was no sign of humans in this building during my visit.

Keesmann Bräu
Wunderburg 5
D-96050 Bamberg
Tel: +49 (0)951 / 26646

Keesmann Bräu is across the street from Mahr's, in an otherwise residential neighborhood of Bamberg. One enters a hallway through the large front door. At the end of the hallway is the entrance to their bier garten. Along the way are doors to a closed-off dining area, kitchen, and bathrooms.
The bar area is the first door on the right. It seats about 50 in the otherwise standard Franconian motif. There is no bar to speak of, but a window for ordering beers.
The tables are made from large kegs.

They serve the three standard brews...the Herren Pils considered by most to be outstanding. A Sternla dunkel and a hefeweizen are usually offered.

Mahr's Bräu
Wunderburg 10, 96050
Bamberg
TEL: 09 51 / 9 15 17 - 0

Mahr's is in a residential area of Bamberg, not near the tourist district. Going through the gate one passes through a large bier garten which seats probably several hundred. The large entrance to the public building opens to a long dark hallway. A closed- off dining area is to the left, the bar area to the right.
Further down the hall are offices, a kitchen and the toilets. The bar area seats about 50 in the style of the other Bamberg breweries; heavy timbered ceilings with dark paneling all around, and big heavy tables.
There is no bar to speak of, just a service area where one gravity keg of helles resides.

Greifenklau
Laurenziplatz 20 96049
Bamberg
Tel: 0951 53219

Greifenklau Braueri is a brewpub in a residential area about a mile up the hill from the Bamberg tourist area.
A sign on the door said that due to a "defekt" in the filtering system, they had only one beer, a helles...however, this was a misfortune of my visit, not yours.
The restaurant seats about 80 patrons and there are a number of other rooms for group and family events.
On the left of the main entrance there is a more informal drinking room. Card playing, however, is not allowed here.
The beer garten seats 500 in nice weather and has wonderful views.
The decor features your basic antlers, steins and such. On a normal visit they would probably have about 3 beers on tap.

Klosterbräu Bamberg
Obere Mühlbrücke 1-3
96049 Bamberg
Tel. 0951/52265

Klosterbräu is at the end of a tiny dead end street at the edge of the no- car area of Bamberg.
Klosterbräu is Bamberg's oldest brewery that is still functioning, beer having been brewed here since 1533.
The large door opens to a vast hallway that leads to a tiny courtyard adjacent the brewing building. The hallway has doors to the toilets, offices, kitchen, and a closed-off dining area.
Most importantly, the next door on the right leads one to the bar area.
There is no bar to speak of, just a service area. The room has a Bayern motif; heavy dark timbers and paneling with whitewashed spaces between where hunting souvenirs are displayed. The room sits about 50 at heavy German-style tables.
Their beer selection is rather unique in that they have a schwarz, a braun, a pils, and a seasonal on tap, as well as a bottled hefe-weizen.
Their food is good and reasonably priced.

Ambräusianum
Dominikanerstr. 10
Bamberg
0951 5090262

Ambräusianum is right next door to the Schlenkerla in the pedestrian-only area of old town Bamberg. Ambräusianum bills itself as "the first and only brew pub in Bamberg" but I don't quite get why.
It reminds one of an American-style fern bar; bright, with light paneling, there are green plants in abundance.
Although the bar area has no seats, there are several small tables. Larger tables for dining are available near the front, outside, more in the back, and even more upstairs.
The brewing operation is opposite the bar in the midst of the tables. They serve the 3 usual German styles: Helles, Dunkel, und Weizen.
Bocks are brewed in season but were not available during our visit.

Schlenkerla
Dominikanerstrasse 6
96049 Bamberg, Germany
Phone: +49 (951) 56060

Schlenkerla is in the no-car area of old town Bamberg.
Monks had been brewing beer at this location since the 13th century, though the original building burned down and was rebuilt in the 1600's. It is primarily Schlenkerla that makes Bamberg the Rauchbier Capital of the World.
One enters through a large door into a dark hallway that leads to the hotel. The hallway has doors to offices, toilets, a dining area to the right that was closed off, and a bar to the left.
The bar area seats about 50 at large German-style tables. There is no bar to speak of, only a small service area with a gravity keg of their one offering, Rauchbier.
At 4:00 PM it was quite busy.
There are also two large tables in the hallway, crowded with chairs, as well as some small standing tables. These were busy also.
One stands in line at the service window, orders a beer and pays...then the fun begins!

Fränkisches Brauhaus Am Spitäle
Burkarderstraße 2-4
Wurzburg 97082
phone: (49) 0931 43159

Brauhaus is a brewpub just across the river from the busy shopping area in Wurzburg.
It has a nightclub motif.
Down the entrance stairs one passes the I.D. checker's booth, then a left turn leads into a spacious lounge; sofas arrayed on the right and booths on the left.
Right turn into a vary large bar area. It's perhaps 35 feet long with only 12 stools and a few small tables along the wall. The wall is actually glass looking into the brewing operation and the open fermenters. An additional closed off room was beyond the bar. Brauhaus serves the 3 standard European draft styles.
At 8:00 pm, this Questor was the only customer; by 9:00, there were several groups of young people.
Here we go!

Hopfingerbräu im Palais
Ebertstraße 24
10117 Berlin
+49 (0)30 / 20 45 86 37

Hopfingerbrau im Palais is sister to the Hopfingerbrau in the main railroad station. This one is in a wonderful location: in the Palace at the Brandendurg Gate, facing the park. A nice American style restaurant, with seating also on a front patio, Hopfingbrau has an ample menu with good food at appropriate prices. Apparently the term "brewpub" has a different meaning in Germany. When asked about the beer, the waiter said he didn't know where the dunkle came from, but that the helles came from Lindenbrau, also a small chain of brewpubs.
In the summer, guests can enjoy the 120 outdoor seats on the terrace and in the Biergarten.

Gaffel am Dom
Trankgasse” or “Bahnhofsvorplatz 1
50667 Cologne
Tel. +49 (0)221 - 9 13 92 60

This Questor was walking down the street from his hotel to wander around the busy part of the neighborhood. Wait !! I recognize that smell !! It's a brewery !! There it is...a block from my hotel. Since I already counted this beer, I didn't look it up or map it out. The Gaffel Pub is the oulet for the brewery which is in the next block. Three store fronts wide and half a block deep the place is huge, with bier hall seating. There is also an upstairs and a downstairs. They must seat several thousand. But the night this Questor was there, there was only one other customer in the large, American-style bar. They have a schnapps, but Gaffel Kölsch is the only beer they serve.

Gasthaus-Brauerei Braustelle
Christianstr. 2 | 50825 Köln
U-Bahnhof Leyendeckerstrasse Tel.: 0221 285 69 32
brauarbeiter@braustelle.com

Braustelle is a brewpub in a bustling neighborhood several miles from downtown Cologne. The door is on the corner of the building, and the modest bar, several steps inside, runs diagonally across the room and seats perhaps 12. The rest of the space is taken up by about 15 variously-sized tables. The brewing equipment is in the back of one side and mostly in the basement. One might think that a pub, self- proclaimed as "Cologne's Smallest Brewery", might have one beer, maybe even a good one. But Braustelle has 4 of their own beers on tap, as well as 5 bottled beers of their own to offer. Like an American brewpub they experiment with styles, offering among others a German Porter, a Doppell, Trippel, and a beer that tasted like an English barley wine. Early on a Saturday evening, the place was quite busy with people eating, drinking, and enjoying themselves.
They also boast Cologne's Smallest Website.

Heller's Brauhaus
Roonstr. 33
50674 Köln
Tel. (02 21) 24 25 45

Heller's Brauhaus is a brewpub in a residential neighborhood of Cologne. It is similar to an American bar in that just inside the door is a long bar surrounded by stools with some tables on the perimeter. A dining area is in the rear as well as another back room. A doorway in the bar area leads to the adjacent store front which is also a dining area and leads to a large enclosed Bier Garten...or "Wintergarten."The brewing operation is even further back. They have three of their own beers on draft, a Kölsch, an unfiltered Kölsch (thus, not a Kölsch...possibly a Keller Bier ) and a Hefe Weizen. They also serve two of their bottled beers, a Pilsner, and a seasonal. The menu is typical of the area and appropriately priced.

Weiss Bräu
Am Weidenbach 24
50676 Köln, Germany
0221 58049549

Weiss Bräu is a neighborhood brewpub in a residential area of Cologne. The brewing operation is in the front window and dominates a corner of the building. Across the room is a typical bar. A service bar, as there is no room to hang out there . That is OK, as there are many tables and stools. The adjacent dining area has several large tables. There is also a larger back room as well as an upstairs area and one in the basement. They serve a Kölsch. as well as their signature Hefe Weizen, which has a very nice, creamy mouth feel. The menu is modest but leans toward meat.
The special, for E119.00 is ribs for four with 10 litres of beer.

Brauhaus Sünner im Walfisch
Salzgasse 13 , 50667
Cologne, Germany
0221 / 257 78 59

On the same street in Cologne's drinking district as several other Brew Pubs is Brauhaus Sünner, an outlet for the Sünner brewery. One passes a tiny patio area in front to enter directly into the dining area. A few steps in, one has the option to make a right turn into the small bar room that seats perhaps 8 on a "U" shaped bench. As well as a Kölsch , they serve their own bottled Hefe Weizen. The rest rooms are upstairs, as well as another dining area.
The barmaid was eager to practice her English; the owner was outside trying to drum up business.

Päffgen Brauhaus
Friesenstrasse 64
Cologne 50670
0221 135-461

The Päffgen Bierhaus, an outlet for the Päffgen Brewery, is in the midst of the busy drinking district of Cologne. One proceeds into the building's entry hall, then into a small bar area with several tables. To get to the modest bar area one would squeeze past the tiny bar. There is also a rear patio overlooking the Rhine. Their one beer, of course, is Päffgen Kölsch.
The beer is served to you in a .2 L cylindrical glass called a Stange, by arrogant young men known as Köbes...who will bring you another one without asking.
The Brauhaus has been here since 1883, but was closed from 1945 - 1949 due to bombing.

Schreckenskammer provides a smoker's area with a separate entrance. The beer is made in the next building. They serve their one beer, a kölsch.
Schreckenskammer's website provides, among other things, a Wörterbuch (dictionary) of beer-drinking terms peculiar to Köln.

The Stange...
the traditional beer glass for drinking Kölsch.

The glass is usually one of your smaller beer glasses, at .2 liters; but they can be larger.

Heumarkt 62
Cologne, Germany
50667
phone: 0049 221 2577765

Pfaffen is a brewpub on the Old Market square, and an outlet for the Pfaffen brewery. Narrow as a row house, there are tables crammed along both sides, front to rear, a standing area front patio and a large bier garten in the rear. There is a small standing area with several tall tables in the center, convenient to the wait staff. The walls are adorned with carved wooden panels, painted tiles, or plaster relief, all depicting brewery scenes, as do the stained glass windows, front and rear. The barman keeps several glasses half full in anticipation of a quick top off and near immediate service. They have their own kolsch on tap as well as their own bottled Hefe Weizen. The food must be good as many people were enjoying a rather late lunch and the friendly ambiance.

Gilden Haus
Große Budengasse 10
50667 Cologne, Germany
0221 2575966

Gilden Haus is a brewpub just off the beaten path between the shopping district and the drinking district, and is an outlet for the Gilden brewery. It would remind one of an English tavern in that it has dark paneling, a full service bar, some tables around the edge of the bar area, and several tall tables with stools that allow one to stand or sit with his beer. The dining room is in the rear, traditional German Bier Halle decor: 8 large picnic-style tables. They serve one beer, Gilden Kölsch. Several regulars were reading the paper while sipping their beer.

Oberer Ganskeller is a large brewery just a block from the busy shopping area of downtown Neumarkt, with it's restaurant in the corner.  A visitor walks up some stairs to the main entrance and is confronted with stairs down to the toilets or a right turn into a modest dining room with perhaps 10 tables.  There is a large selection of Gansbrau beer on the menu which the server will bring from an undisclosed location.

Hausbrauerei Altstadthof is a brewpub just off the busy market place in downtown Nürnberg.  A rather small establishment, the bar takes up most of the space, with small tables lining the walls.  The brewing operation is not evident.  The chalk board beer list has all of their products, even seasonals that are not available.  Even so, they have four beers on tap.  It's a cozy place to drink, and people seemed to enjoy their food.

Brauerei Schanzenbräu
Adam-Klein-Str. 11
90429 Nürnberg
Tel. 0911/ 93 77 67 91

Brauerei Schanzenbräu is a brewpub in an older neighborhood in Nürnberg .  The business has seen better days.  The interior has not been painted in our lifetime.  The dozen or so tables are mismatched, with about half of them being formica topped, some with drawers, that would remind one of elementary school tables.  Open early Sunday for all day brunch, customers ate, but did not linger for beer.  There is no bar, and the brewing operation is not evident.  They have three of their own beers, and several guest taps.  Although tasty, the beers are overpriced compared to other establishments.

Brauerei Fässla
Obere Königsstraße 19-21
96052 Bamberg
Telefon:
0951 /26516

Brauerei Fässla is in downtown Bamberg.  The brewery claims to have been in business for 350 years, perhaps in that building.  It's a small restaurant, with about 10 tables in the front room and perhaps 6 more in the back.  No bar, and no brewing equipment as far as we could see.  They offered four of their own beers, and were doing a rousing business on a Saturday afternoon.

Woinemer Hausbrauerei
Friedrichstraße 23
69469 Weinheim, Germany
06201 12001

Woinemer Hausbrauerei is a brewpub several blocks from downtown Weinheim.  A large establishment, it is disconcerting to enter as the main entrance is thru a messy garage.  This entrance takes one into a hostess station in a hallway.  To the right is a large dining room, to the left the bar area.  There is no bar to speak of, and although the area probably seats 50, it seems quite cozy.  They serve three year- round beers and a seasonal.  The decor is brewpubish, sporting hops, steins, and brewery murals.  Several young men in rubber boots kept using the elevator, leading one to believe that there is an extensive brewing operation in the basement.

KULTURBRAUEREI HEIDELBERG Leyergasse 6
69117 Heidelberg
Tel: +49 (0)6221-502980

The Kulturbraurei in Heidelberg is a brewpub near the busy tourist and shopping area around the university.  The bar area...there is no bar to speak of...seats about 100 in typical German beerhall style, and there is a small stand-up area. One can find a cozier dining room if desired, as well as rooms upstairs and a biergarten.  Kulturbrauerei features a helles and a hefeweizen year round as well as a seasonal.  Perhaps this is a fine dining establishment, as the menu prices were particularly high.

Vetter´s Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus
Steingasse 9 - Im Schöneck
69117 Heidelberg
Tel: 06221/165850

The Vetter Brauhaus in Heidelberg resides in the busy shopping and tourist area near the university.  The brewpub has been there a long time; it is quite worn and has a lot of character.  The main room has about 6 large tables and about 6 more smaller ones, and large displays of hops hanging like chandeliers.  The 10-barrel brewing system stands out quite prominently.  A helles is served year round as well as a seasonal.  "The world's strongest beer" is their claim to fame, once featured in the Guinness Book.  Their "33" beer has an original gravity of 1.033, and tastes like a strong doppelbock.

Airbräu
Zentralgebäude Geb113.01 2
85356 München, Germany
089 97593111

Airbräu is a brewpub in the Munich Airport.  If you have to get stuck in an airport, having a genuine brewpub on the premises may soften the blow. Airbräu helps Munich's Franz Josef Strauss airport make the list of the 10 best airports to be stranded in, as rated by Woman's Day magazine. A thirsty traveler can hoist one of their fine brews for €2.30. As it was 8:30 AM and we were hustling for a 9:15 international flight, we did not stop longer than to take photos.
Na ja...maybe next time.

Schalander Hausbrauerei
Bänschstr. 91
Berlin 10247
+49 30 89617073

Schalander is a small brewpub in the dingy edge of an otherwise vibrant older neighborhood in midtown Berlin.  The typical-sized bar area has a few seats at the bar and several tables, with more tables in a back room.  Most of the seating is on a front patio.  The small beer operation is on display by the front door.  The beers are particularly tasty, so bold they may be called American-style German beers.  The menu is mostly flatbread and appetizers, inexpensive but very popular with the neighborhood.

Hops & Barley
Wühlischstraße 38
10245 Berlin, Deutschland
030 2936-7534

Hops & Barley is a small brewpub in an older area of Berlin.   Although there are several tables inside, most customers sit out front when the weather permits.  There is also a large room in the back.  Augmented with only a few snacks, the menu emphasises beer.  Not really true to style, the beers are bold and flavorful, with three on tap at any one time.  A small brew kettle, on display in the barroom, is mostly for decoration as the real brewing takes place in a back room.

Schlossplatzbrauerei Coepenick
Inhaberin Astrid Rubbert
Auf dem Schlossplatz / Grünstraße
12555 Berlin

Self-proclaimed as the smallest brewery in Germany, the Schlossplatz brewpub is across the street from Schloss Kopenick in the Berlin suburb of Kopenic.  The size of a generous two car garage, there is a small bar and several tables and a work area with what looks to be a 1 Barrel kettle.  The is more seating on the patio out front.  They serve a helles and a dunkel.

Hopfingerbräu
Europaplatz 1
10557 Berlin
+49 (0)30 / 20 62 46 24

Hopfingerbräu is a brewpub in the main train station in central Berlin.  The small storefront isn't very promising as it is as narrow as a small row house, but looks are deceiving as a sign in the entranceway says it seats 300 inside as well as 200 more on their patio.  The pub widens out inside and is about a city block long, with the part beyond the generous bar blocked during the slower times.  The brew kettles on display on either side of the bar are for decoration as the beer is brewed at their other location.  They have the standard three beers on tap, a Pils, Dunkel, and Hefe.  The beer and menu items seem pricey but are probably quite reasonable given the location.

Brewbaker
Arminiusstr 2-4 10551
Berlin, Germany
0177 694 09 61

Brewbaker Brewpub used to be located under a railroad viaduct. It has now moved several miles away and is located in an indoor market. Along with the brewpub are stalls, kiosks, and stands, selling various merchandise. The bar and brewery take up one stand, the seating area another. There is no kitchen. If one is hungry, one can step over to the fruit stand or perhaps the sausage stand. They have two of their beers on draft, and several more in bottles. The owner hopes that with yuppies moving into the neighborhood the location will be good.

Badisch Brauhaus
Stephanienstraße 38-40
76133 Karlsruhe, Germany
0721 144-4400

Badisch Brauhaus is a large brewpub in the basement of a hotel on the edge of the busy shopping district.  Immense, they describe themselves as an indoor bier garten and have about 30 good-sized tables.  The typical bar area is nearly as big.  There is a lower level, closed when I was there, almost as spacious, and a third level below that.  The brewing operation is glassed in at the back of the main bar.  They have two year-round beers on tap as well as a seasonal.  The beers seem true to style, good, but not wonderful.  The afternoon beer special each day is a full litre for E3.00.

HopfenSchlingel
Wirtshausbrauerei & Biergarten
Weiherstraße 13
75173 Pforzheim
Telefon 07231 24477

HopfenSchlingel is a brewpub in downtown Pforzheim.  Very small, the bar seats about 25 customers on barstools placed randomly around small bar-style tables.  The diminutive, computerized brewing operation is behind the bar.  They have a pils on tap as well as occasional seasonals.  The main dining area is upstairs.

Wirthaus Wolfbrau is a corner bar in a residential neighborhood; an outlet for the Wolf brewery.  They have three full- time beers on tap as well as at least one seasonal.  They also have about 10 guest bottles.  There is no bar to speak of, although there are several long, narrow, bar-style tables with bar stools along each side, as well as perhaps a dozen dining tables.  At meal times the place fills up with neighborhood folk, families, and young and old alike, so that every seat is filled.  The food is attractive, inexpensive, and judging by the crowds, quite tasty.  Oh, and the beer is quite good, too.

Brauhaus Kühler Krug
Wilhelm-Baur-Straße 3a
76135 Karlsruhe
Tel: 0721 / 831 64 16

Brauhaus Kühler Krug is a very large facility in a park-like setting by a river.  It's been there a long time as the transit stop is named for it.  On the day of this visit, several sections were closed off.  It appears they have a dance hall as well as a bier garten.  What might be a bar was also closed.  The main dining area focuses on the brewing operation which is up a few steps in the center of the back of the room.  A chalkboard shows the month's brewing schedule; something nearly every day.  They have two full- time beers as well as a seasonal.  The manager, quite friendly, gave me that day's release, a märzen, in exchange for a Questor card.  All of the beers were quite good.

Der Vogelbrau Karlsruhe
Kapellenstraße 50
76131 Karlsruhe, Germany
0721 386364

Vogelbrau is a brew pub in a busy residential area just off the University campus.  The dining area is in a separate storefront.  They have one year-round pilsner.  A pamphlet at the bar lists 23 seasonals and their release dates.  The beers are quite tasty.  The modern computerized brewing operation is behind glass in the front room, which seats about ten and a long bar that opens to another small seating area.

There were two beers on the list, Pils and Doppelbock.  When I ordered a "doppel" the bartender looked as if he didn't understand, so I said "double".  Being busy, he was impatient and said, " Pils oder buck."  I said "kein pils."

Eschenbräu is a small brewpub located in the center courtyard of an apartment complex in the Berlin suburb of Wedding.  The courtyard has about 20 large picnic tables and a kiosk where the beer is served.  The lone barmaid also runs the bar in a nearby small and cozy cellar.  The brewing operation is displayed in a storefront above.  Menus were available, but a kitchen was not evident.  The beer menu has the release date for each of the nine seasonal releases.  They also have a pilsner, a dunkel, and a hefeweizen year round.  I really enjoyed the place; I'd go back.

Marcus-Bräu
Münzstraße 1-3
Berlin, Germany 10178
(030) 2476985

The Marcus-Bräu brewpub is just a block off the big tourist area near downtown Berlin.  There are three doors: one to the coffee shop, one to the ice cream stand and the third to the brewpub.  The common dining area is an eclectic mis- match of furniture.  The one barrel (or smaller) brewing kettle shares space behind the bar with the ice cream machine and the coffee equipment.  The Hefe weizen served there was familiar.  Wait... don't tell me...I know !!   It's Ellicott Mills recipe.  Yes, it's made with the same yeast as Ellicott Mills and I didn't care for it.  On this wonderful summer night, therewere only several other customers there.  When I paid, the barmaid had to get the manager to break my E20.00.  I wouldn't go back.

When your beer is empty, another one appears, until you give the barman the "no" sign. The beer won't go to waste; if you don't want it, the next guy will. They have one beer, Alt, which comes in an 8-ounce glass as shown.

I was in Schumacher's Ash Wednesday evening.  I noticed that the dining area was closed off.  That was because at 6:30, mass was to be said in the dining area.  The bar got packed; people were pounding down their beers, preparing for mass.
Gimme that old time religion!

Stiefel Brau is a brew pub in the busy shopping and tourist district of Saarbrucken, Germany. Two large copper kettles are in the main dining room although no other brewing equipment is evident. Although the building is large, both the bar and dining room seem rather small and cozy. The beers...Helles, Marzen, and a Dunkle, seem like home brews in that their defining characteristic seemed overemphasized, for example, the Marzen was very malty. The food menu was varied and reasonably priced.

LINDENBRÄU AM POTSDAMER PLATZ
Bellevuestr. 3 - 5, 10785 Berlin
telephone: 030-25 75 12 80

Lindenbrau is located in a busy tourist area. They have seating for probably 300 outdoors, in a sheltered area between buildings. There are 3 floors, with some of the floor space taken up by the brewing equipment.
It was hard to get a server's attention, but once we did, service was astonishingly fast. When asked about the beer list, the server said they had their own "homebrews". The beer tasted like it was made from a kit. The hefe weizen was good, but artificially spicy...too much cinnamon and cloves. The red lager tasted sugary sweet.
The food menu was quite extensive; the dishes tasty and in large portions. I would give them a second chance at the beer, but I would definitely go back for the food.
