The Quest for the Holy Grain - Best Brew Pubs
Hamburg, Germany

Hamburg is the second smallest of the German states, but it has a big history when it comes to brewing.
In the 12th century, Hamburg was known as the "Brauhaus of the Hanseatic League."
At that time, Hamburg had over 500 breweries working within its walls!
Hamburg is also Germany's second largest city.

Gröninger Privatbrauerei Hamburg
Willy-Brandt-Straße 47
20457 Hamburg, Germany
+49 40 570105100

Gröninger is a brewpub in the low- rise business district, across the street from the high-rise business district, near down town Hamburg.
This area was Hamburg's brewing district during the Middle Ages.
The restaurant is upstairs, but Questors will enter into the Braukeller where the bar and brewery are located.
A rather long entry hall has a few tall bar tables in it, but one continues on.
There is a service bar with only several tables, then a longer area with seating among the brewing equipment.
Gröninger offers the expected three beers, but the favorite seems to be the Pils.
The Braukeller features a "buffet". Meats and various sides are on display.
Tell the waiter what you want and he will bring it.
Or, if with a group, you could go with the Brauerschmaus, or Brewer's Feast.
This includes meat loaf, pot roast, and sausages made on site.

Brauhaus Joh.Albrecht
Adolphsbrücke 7
20457 Hamburg, Germany
+49 40 367740

Brauhaus Joh. Albrecht is a brew pub in downtown Hamburg.
They also have a restaurant in Dusseldorf and several other German cities.
It is situated on a canal in a business area full of tall buildings.
Long but not deep, one has a good view of the canal environs throughout the venue.
It's almost an American style bar in that there are plenty of stools along the bar and many small tables in the bar area.
The brewing operation is in full view for all to see.
Joh.Albrecht has at least 4 of their own beers on tap, but I found the service to be indifferent.

Blockbrau
Bei den St. Pauli-Landungsbrücken 3
20359 Hamburg, Germany
+49 40 44405000

Blockbrau is a brewpub at the tourist part of the Hamburg Harbor.
Blockbrau is the fruition of the vision of Eugen Block, who said,
"It has always been my wish to brew a beer of my own, in a large guest house full of life and amusing cheerfulness. Here our guests with friends and family will enjoy good food and joy. I am very happy that I could realize this dream at this fantastic location. "
A very large place, access to the docks goes right past their door.
The decor is bier hall throughout, on all three floors.
The mostly outdoor upper floor advertises a nice view of the harbor, but that proves true only along the railing.
The brewing operation is visible beyond the service bar, and on the mezzanine.
Blockbrau makes 3 year-round brews and a seasonal.
Most of the customers seemed like tourists interested in eating.
